Queensland have levelled the 2026 State of Origin series and set up a decider at Suncorp with a remarkable 44-24 victory at the MCG, thanks to a stunning second half that will be remembered as one of Queensland's finest and one of New South Wales' most disastrous.
Second-half onslaught
Trailing 12-8 at half-time, the Maroons piled on six tries to secure a 20-point win in front of a record State of Origin crowd of 91,761. The result heaps pressure on NSW coach Laurie Daley after questionable selection calls failed, while his refusal to use his bench early in the second half allowed Queensland to build unstoppable momentum.
Key performers
Queensland skipper Cameron Munster played perhaps his finest game in maroon, Sam Walker silenced doubts about his Origin readiness, and Selwyn Cobbo delivered one of the greatest games by any Origin winger, scoring a hat-trick to lead the Maroons to a famous comeback victory. NSW entered the clash favored to wrap up the series, but the Blues were left in shock after the second-half onslaught saw them concede 36 points in an uninspired showing marked by ill-discipline.
The 12-8 half-time score flattered Queensland, who were outmuscled and outplayed by NSW in the opening stanza. It was a stark improvement for the Blues, who had lost the three prior first halves 66-12, with Laurie Daley's pre-game message simple: don't miss the start. However, the script was quickly reversed in the second half as NSW tired and found themselves unable to turn the momentum.
First-half action
Queensland broke the opening arm wrestle with a slick break down the right edge from Cobbo, leading to Sam Walker slotting a penalty goal for a 2-0 lead. The lead lasted less than a minute. Tom Flegler spilled the ensuing kick-off, and debutant Mark Nawaqanitawase swooped on the error, finding Kotoni Staggs for the game's first try. Nawaqanitawase later crossed for the Blues' second try, set up by a delightful spiral pass, putting NSW up 12-2.
The Maroons, however, struck against the run of play with one of the great Origin tries. A Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow break set up a last-tackle play where Munster fired a pass reminiscent of a Shane Warne leg break, with replacement Max Plath turning an inside ball to a charging Trent Loiero for a stunning four-pointer. The try came at a cost, with skipper Munster sent for a HIA.
Second-half dominance
The Maroons broke through minutes after half-time when Cobbo finished a Munster kick from broken play, and Walker converted. Cobbo made it a double after a silky scrum play saw Walker throw a short ball to Kalyn Ponga, who skipped across field to send the winger over. Jojo Fifita added another try, making it three in the opening 18 minutes of the half to put the Blues on the ropes.
Nawaqanitawase's second try did little to slow the Maroons, as Tabuai-Fidow continued his tryscoring form with a four-pointer off a Cobbo grubber, a play that saw Staggs sin-binned for a high shot on Ponga. Lindsay Collins strolled over, and Cobbo completed his hat-trick with a spectacular putdown. A Mitch Barnett consolation try with four minutes remaining provided little solace for the Blues.
