QPR, Blackburn & Derby Battle for Bristol City's O'Leary in January Transfer Race
QPR join Blackburn & Derby in transfer race for goalkeeper

Queens Park Rangers have entered a three-way Championship battle to sign Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary during the January transfer window, according to reports.

Stephan's Goalkeeping Conundrum at Loftus Road

Since his appointment as QPR head coach last summer, Julien Stephan has faced a persistent dilemma over his first-choice shot-stopper. The Frenchman initially dropped Paul Nardi in favour of young keeper Joe Walsh, but that experiment faltered after Walsh conceded 13 goals in his first four league matches before a wrist injury struck.

This forced a recall for Nardi, while veteran free agent signing Ben Hamer, 38, has also rotated into the side, making seven Championship appearances. Stephan's ongoing uncertainty between the posts has now prompted the club to seek a new, established number one, with Sky Sports reporting that Max O'Leary is a prime target.

O'Leary Seeking Game Time at Ashton Gate

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international finds himself in a similar situation at his current club. After being first choice under Liam Manning last season, O'Leary has been displaced this term by Manchester United loanee Radek Vitek. O'Leary has been limited to just five league appearances, only featuring when Vitek was injured.

This lack of action, coupled with his contract expiring in June 2026, makes a January move likely. Bristol City risk losing him for nothing in the summer if they do not sell now. Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas confirmed the interest, stating the player is "keen for more game time" after falling down the pecking order.

Championship Rivals Provide Stiff Competition

QPR's pursuit is not straightforward, however. They must fend off significant interest from fellow second-tier sides Blackburn Rovers and Derby County. A potential advantage for the R's is their current league position, sitting above both rival suitors in the Championship table.

O'Leary, a one-club man who has spent his entire career with Bristol City aside from several loan spells, earned his first senior cap for the Republic of Ireland in June 2025. His availability presents a rare opportunity for Championship clubs to secure an experienced goalkeeper.

QPR had also been linked with Sunderland's Anthony Patterson, but the Black Cats' valuation is understood to be prohibitive for most clubs at this level, making O'Leary a more financially viable alternative.
