Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) is now facing the prospect of spending years behind bars after being charged with the murder of Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) in Emmerdale. As viewers know, however, Charity is not the real killer—she is covering for her granddaughter, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill).
The dramatic turn of events unfolded earlier this week when Sarah walked in on the final confrontation between Charity and Dr Todd, during which Charity accused the doctor of rape. In the heat of the moment, Sarah shoved Todd, causing her to hit her head and fall. It quickly became clear that Todd had stopped breathing, and despite Sarah's attempts at resuscitation, she could not be revived.
Charity's Confession and Cover-Up
With Todd dead and Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) having witnessed the scene, a panicked Sarah looked to Charity for help. In a risky move, Charity told the police that she had killed Todd, while Serena helped them devise a cover story before fleeing out the back door. In tonight's episode, both Sarah and Charity were taken in for questioning—Charity was charged with murder, while Sarah was treated as a witness.
Despite sticking to their story that Charity had pushed Todd in self-defence, the detectives remained unconvinced. DS Ramsden (Chelsea Edge) left Charity horrified by revealing her theory that Charity had killed Todd in revenge because the investigation into her rape had not gone as she had hoped. As Charity grew tired, hungry, and frustrated, she demanded to know when her interrogation would end, but DS Ramsden pointed out that they had a long way to go to rule out a revenge killing.
Risk of Life in Prison
With Charity determined to protect Sarah, she is risking spending the rest of her life in prison. The stakes could not be higher, as the police continue to press their case. The question remains whether Charity's sacrifice will be worth it, or if the truth will eventually come out.
