Queens Park Rangers have pulled off a significant transfer coup, agreeing a deal to sign defender Ronnie Edwards from Championship rivals Southampton for a reported £4.5 million.
Medical Imminent for Returning Defender
The 22-year-old England under-20 international is scheduled to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours. If completed swiftly, he could be available for selection for QPR's FA Cup third-round clash against West Ham United on Sunday. This move comes after QPR failed to secure a permanent deal for the player last summer following his successful loan spell.
Edwards' Versatility a Key Asset
Edwards spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at Loftus Road, making a strong impression with his composed performances. His versatility proved particularly valuable to manager Marti Cifuentes, who even deployed him in a midfield role on occasion. Cifuentes praised Edwards' tactical awareness and quality in breaking lines, highlighting his importance to the squad.
The transfer provides a timely boost for QPR's defensive options. The club confirmed that centre-back Jake Clarke-Salter is not due back in training until later this month, while Liam Morrison is also sidelined with a knock, missing the upcoming weekend's fixture.
A Player with Affection for the Club
Edwards has previously expressed his fondness for QPR, hinting at a potential return. Upon leaving the club last summer, he posted on Instagram: "Thank you to everyone at QPR for making my short time at the club so special... It’s goodbye for now." He also revealed that he has family members who are supporters of the West London club, making the move a personally significant one.
His departure from Southampton has been on the cards, having been excluded from their last five matchday squads under manager Tonda Eckert. QPR have now acted decisively to bring a familiar and talented face back to Loftus Road in a permanent capacity.
