A 20-year-old man from Kentucky died after falling 177 feet at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon while attempting to take a photo. Zachary Nicholas Mertens slipped in a closed area of the park near South Falls on Monday evening and plunged into the water below.
Fatal fall at South Falls
Witnesses at the scene attempted to perform CPR on Mertens, but he was pronounced dead shortly after the fall. Regional park manager Chris Gilliand described the incident to the Statesman Journal as 'a pretty horrific accident. A very tough situation.'
The accident occurred in an area of the park that was closed to the public. Mertens had been trying to capture a photo at the South Falls when he lost his footing, according to reports.
Recent fatal falls at tourist sites
The incident follows another tragedy last month, when two adults and a child died after falling from Germany's tallest observation tower. The family was found at the base of the 213-foot wood-and-steel structure in the Harz Mountains. Firefighters responded to the scene, but the three were declared dead.
The German tower, which cost approximately €10 million to build, features two observation decks and a 'skywalk' with a glass floor at a height of 45 meters. An elevator provides access, and visitors can also reach the top via stairs or descend through a 110-meter-long slide.
