Police have launched an investigation after shocking scenes of violence erupted at a non-league football match on Saturday, with players, a manager and supporters all becoming embroiled in a mass brawl.
Chaotic Scenes After Final Whistle
The FA Vase clash between Bilston Town FC and Droylsden FC, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the visiting side, descended into chaos moments after the conclusion of the game. Footage circulated on social media platforms captured multiple violent altercations, although the precise catalyst for the disorder remains unclear at this stage.
One widely-shared video appears to show a Bilston Town player exchanging punches with a group of spectators off the pitch, before being wrestled to the ground. Another clip suggests a coach from Droylsden being chased across the playing surface by an opposing player and several fans. The coach is seen throwing a punch during the confrontation, retreating, and then turning to strike another individual wearing a hooded top, who falls to the floor.
Police Investigation Underway
West Midlands Police confirmed they were called to Bilston Town's Queen Street ground at approximately 5pm on Saturday following reports of the disturbance. In a statement issued on Sunday, a police spokesperson revealed that no arrests had yet been made, but emphasised that enquiries are ongoing.
'We are working to establish the full facts and will be contacting the victims to get full statements, and will be reviewing mobile phone and CCTV footage,' the statement read. 'Anyone with information has been asked to get in touch with us.'
Club Statements and Internal Reviews
Bilston Town FC released multiple statements via social media addressing the incident. Initially, the club sought to contextualise the circulating videos, stating they were 'not a fair reflection of the game or day as a whole' and thanking Droylsden supporters for their cooperation.
A subsequent, more detailed statement expressed the club's 'extreme concern' about the post-match events. Bilston Town confirmed the matter has been reported to the police, with the club fully cooperating with that investigation. They have also notified the relevant football authorities and initiated an internal review.
'The safety and wellbeing of players, staff, officials, and spectators is of paramount importance to the Club,' the statement asserted. 'Pending the outcome of these investigations, the Club will be taking immediate interim steps in line with our procedures.'
In stark contrast, Droylsden FC's official social media reaction to the match made no reference whatsoever to the post-match violence. Their post focused solely on the footballing achievement, celebrating the two goals from Nelson Van that secured their place in the quarter-finals of the prestigious Isuzu FA Vase competition.
Context of the Match
The fixture was a significant one in the national FA Vase tournament, with Droylsden's victory propelling them into the last eight. The club's social media post praised their team's 'brilliant performance' against a 'resolute, direct and determined' Bilston side on a difficult, wet playing surface, and commended their travelling supporters.
The incident casts a shadow over what should have been a celebratory occasion for the victorious team, and raises serious questions about safety protocols and crowd control at non-league football grounds. The investigations by both the police and the football clubs will now seek to determine the full sequence of events and identify those responsible for the violence.
