Newcastle's Woltemade Dilemma Sparks Transfer Speculation
Dietmar Hamann has characterized Nick Woltemade's difficulties at Newcastle United as 'remarkable,' creating what he describes as a 'really tricky situation' for manager Eddie Howe. The German international joined Newcastle in a £69 million transfer after the club reluctantly sold Alexander Isak to Liverpool for over £120 million.
From Promising Start to Concerning Decline
Woltemade arrived at St James' Park with a respectable record from Wolfsburg, having scored 18 goals in 36 games, though some German observers felt Newcastle overpaid for the striker. The 24-year-old initially impressed, netting six goals before November and demonstrating strong all-around play that excited Newcastle supporters.
However, the towering forward's contributions have dramatically diminished during the winter period. Woltemade has managed just one goal in his last 20 appearances across all competitions, prompting Howe to experiment with deploying him in deeper positions out of increasing desperation.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has rejected the notion that Woltemade can effectively play in midfield, while Hamann finds his compatriot's sudden drop-off 'very strange' and has raised the possibility of a summer sale after just one season.
Hamann's Analysis of the Situation
'I couldn't believe the developments in the last few weeks and months regarding Nick Woltemade,' Hamann told BoyleSports. 'There was a story in one of the German papers that he hasn't settled in the North-east, which I personally think is a paradise for a footballer.'
'He had a great start and was adored by the faithful, adored by the fans. It's obviously a very strange situation because if you had told me this after six or eight weeks, where he scored a few goals, I would have said he's going places.'
'To have the turnaround now in a short space of time is really remarkable. What you hear and what you see probably makes me think that there might be a summer exit, which is obviously not a good situation for the club because they paid an awful lot of money.'
Hamann posed critical questions about Newcastle's options: 'Do you force him to stay here? Is that a good solution? And who's going to pay the money for him now? I think it's a really tricky situation for both of them, for both parties, but especially for the club.'
The Perfect Replacement Identified
If Newcastle decides to sell Woltemade this summer, Hamann believes former Manchester United and Chelsea transfer target Victor Osimhen would represent the 'perfect' replacement. The Nigerian striker has been in sensational form since joining Galatasaray in 2024, scoring 55 goals in 67 games after helping Napoli win the Serie A title.
'I think Victor Osimhen is one of the top five centre forwards in Europe,' said Hamann, who played for Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich during his career. 'I couldn't believe that he ended up in Turkey. Obviously, Napoli paid an awful lot of money for him, but I'm very surprised that none of the English teams signed him.'
Hamann noted that Premier League clubs struggled for center forwards last summer, attempting to sign players like Benjamin Sesko while others needed time to adapt. 'I think he's an outstanding player and I think he's probably the reason why Galatasaray is doing well in the league and also in the Champions League.'
'I love watching him and I think, if he were to play in the Premier League, there are teams he would make much better. Obviously, Liverpool have got two players there now, so he won't end up there, but he's an outstanding player. He's got pace, he's got power, he can finish, a wonderful player.'
'If Newcastle do sell Nick Woltemade, he could be the perfect fit,' Hamann concluded, highlighting what could become one of the summer's most significant transfer stories.
