Newcastle expect Arsenal to bid for Tonali after Spurs approach
Newcastle expect Arsenal bid for Tonali after Spurs move

Newcastle United are reportedly expecting Arsenal to make a formal offer for Sandro Tonali, believing the Premier League champions remain the frontrunners for the midfielder despite Tottenham Hotspur's recent approach.

Arsenal considered favourites

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle's hierarchy have long considered Arsenal the favourites to sign the 26-year-old Italy international and are anticipating a bid from Mikel Arteta's side in the upcoming summer transfer window. Arsenal explored a deal for Tonali in January but saw their late approach rejected by Newcastle.

Tonali has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Manchester City. However, Newcastle suspect that Tottenham's public interest may be a tactic to prompt Arsenal into making a move.

Spurs' interest and De Zerbi's admiration

Tottenham have made contact with Tonali's representatives to discuss a potential move to Roberto De Zerbi's side but have not yet opened negotiations with Newcastle. De Zerbi has long admired Tonali, having wanted to sign him for Sassuolo earlier in his career.

"I wanted to bring Tonali to Sassuolo, if I'd stayed, after his first year at AC Milan," De Zerbi said during his time at Brighton. "I said, 'maybe they'll fall for it and I'll bring him here'. I saw him at Brescia and thought he was the player he proved to be."

Newcastle's £100m valuation

Newcastle are expected to demand a £100 million transfer fee for Tonali, who joined from AC Milan for £55m three years ago. The Magpies have informed Tonali's representatives that they will not sell unless their asking price is met.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have reportedly told Newcastle they will not submit an offer due to the high transfer fee and wage demands.
