New Zealand grew in confidence after the goal and created several chances to take the lead. Ryan Thomas forced a save from El Shenawy with a curling effort from the edge of the box, while substitute Marco Rojas saw a shot blocked on the line by Egyptian defender Mahmoud Hamdy.
Egypt nearly snatched a winner in stoppage time when Salah's free-kick hit the crossbar, but the match ended in a draw that leaves both teams with a point in a group that also includes Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
