A Unique Patrol System Adds Friendly Competition
One of the camp's defining features is its patrol system, where attendees join one of four teams: the Foxes, Badgers, Hawks, or Squirrels. Each night, campers compete in silly and outrageous games to earn patrol points for their team. The author, who attended the second weekend from September 4 to 7, signed up with friends for the Badgers, described as the most low-key patrol.
Opening night featured patrol rallies, where campers met their teammates and leaders while learning catchy chants. Many fellow Badgers were repeat visitors, having attended for several consecutive years and traveling from across the country. The group then paraded through the forest, accompanied by musicians, to the opening ceremony at basecamp.
Activities Range from Archery to Aerial Silks
The ceremony featured performances by dancers and the South London Samba band, with music sets from a Balkan folk group and a Paramore-esque four-piece. On Saturday, the author spent the day climbing trees, building shelters, and taking part in archery battles. Sunday included unusual hobbies such as terrazzo art and aerial silks.
The author noted that their screen time was the lowest it had ever been during the weekend. Evenings were spent in bell tents in the boutique camping area, with the weekend culminating in the Badgers winning the Wildfire Cup and a performance by Boney M.
