Gary Neville Predicts Major Manchester United Midfield Overhaul

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has forecast a significant midfield exodus at Old Trafford this summer, predicting that both Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro will depart the club. Neville insists United must replace the duo with two high-quality additions to compete effectively next season.

Ugarte's Struggles and Casemiro's Impending Departure

Ugarte, who joined Manchester United in a £50 million transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, has failed to justify his hefty price tag across two underwhelning seasons in English football. The 24-year-old midfielder has yet to start any of interim manager Michael Carrick's opening nine games, highlighting his diminished role at the club.

In contrast, Kobbie Mainoo has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence under Carrick after being marginalized under previous manager Ruben Amorim. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have also been instrumental in United's midfield, with both playing key roles in Sunday's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.

Casemiro, who scored the opening goal in that match, has already confirmed he will leave United at the end of the season. The Brazilian's departure will create a significant void both on the pitch and in the dressing room, given his vast experience and leadership qualities.

Neville's Assessment and Transfer Recommendations

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville emphasized that it was "right" for United to respect Casemiro's wish to seek a new challenge elsewhere. However, he stressed the urgency for his former club to secure two top-tier midfield reinforcements.

"Casemiro has got such vast experience. Obviously Manchester United have got him in the latter part of his career," Neville said. "When you see him now, you imagine... well we know because we saw him win five Champions League titles... what he was: he's an exceptional central midfield player."

Neville added: "They will miss his presence in both boxes. I think he's phenomenal at getting on the end of crosses and he's phenomenal at clearing them. He's brave in the air, he's really good, he gets up early. It was an exceptional goal."

The eight-time Premier League winner believes United need a "Michael Carrick-type" midfielder and a more combative "destroyer" to replace the outgoing duo. He warned that Mainoo and Casemiro's current partnership would be insufficient for Champions League football and multiple cup competitions next season.

United's Midfield Search and Carrick's Response

United had already begun searching for central midfield reinforcements before Casemiro announced his departure, with players like Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Carlos Baleba linked last summer. Casemiro himself has reportedly encouraged United's hierarchy to pursue a move for fellow Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle.

When asked about the possibility of Casemiro reversing his decision to leave, interim boss Michael Carrick was cautious but praised the midfielder's recent impact.

"I think, in some ways, it's difficult to say," Carrick stated at his post-match press conference. "When something is decided, in some ways, the fact that it's decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation really. I think the impact he's had has been terrific, certainly since I've been here and working with him."

The Bigger Picture for Manchester United

Neville pointed out that while United have strengthened their forward line with signings like Benjamin Sesko, Mathus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, the midfield remains a critical area needing attention.

"United need two central midfield players in the summer," Neville declared. "In the last summer transfer window, they rebuilt their forward line... and that's really starting to hum and purr and you can see real goals and real threat. Manchester United didn't score enough goals last season and that's an absolute no-no here, you have to score goals, so they've corrected that."

He concluded: "There does look to be good options up top but the centre of midfield is a problem. I do think the back needs looking at but I think the midfield will be the real focus in the summer transfer window."

With Ugarte likely to follow Casemiro out of Old Trafford, Manchester United face a crucial summer as they aim to rebuild their midfield engine room for the challenges ahead.
