Gary Neville Criticizes Arsenal's Full-Back Limitations in Title Race Defeat
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has claimed that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was "hampered enormously" by his team's full-backs during their crucial 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Neville specifically pointed to the limitations of Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera in attacking situations as a significant factor in the Gunners' loss.
Title Race Takes Dramatic Turn
Arsenal entered the match with just one win in their previous five contests across all competitions but showed renewed fighting spirit against the defending champions. The visitors took an early lead through Kai Havertz after Gianluigi Donnarumma's error gifted them an equalizer, canceling out Rayan Cherki's sublime opener for City.
However, Erling Haaland's second-half strike proved decisive, giving Manchester City a vital victory that closed the gap at the Premier League summit to just three points. With City holding a game in hand over Arsenal, Pep Guardiola's side can claim top spot if they defeat struggling Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
"I believe today, I believe on Wednesday, I believed a week ago because I see them every day and I know the level that we have," Arteta told reporters after the match. "But today, if they need to be more convinced, I think they are now more convinced. We are talking about it in the dressing room."
Neville's Detailed Analysis of Arsenal's Defensive Limitations
On his Sky Sports podcast, Neville provided extensive analysis of the top-of-the-table clash, praising Bernardo Silva's "above-and-beyond" performance for Manchester City while highlighting Arsenal's specific weaknesses.
"Bernardo Silva in the second half, what a performance that is just to grip a game," Neville said. "What we've just seen there from Bernardo Silva is absolutely above and beyond. He just beat Viktor Gyokeres on a header at the back post, he's then pressing two minutes later, and he epitomizes what Manchester City are."
While acknowledging Arsenal's positive aspects in the match, Neville focused particularly on how the Gunners' full-back situation affected their attacking capabilities.
The Full-Back Problem: Defensive Strength, Attacking Deficiency
"Arsenal were hampered enormously by their full-backs," Neville explained. "I thought actually they did a good job, Hincapie and Mosquera, they really stuck to their task, but they're limited on the ball."
Neville contrasted Arsenal's current full-back options with what they typically have available, noting: "If you think about Matheus Nunes and Nico O'Reilly for City, or how Jurrien Timber or Riccardo Calafiori or others are for Arsenal, they were just blocked off. You haven't got that subtlety on that ball or that ability, that safe, consistent and reliable ability, to feed the ball in."
The former England international emphasized that Hincapie and Mosquera are essentially center-backs playing in full-back positions, which limited Arsenal's ability to build attacks from wide areas.
Missing Timber's Influence
Neville specifically highlighted the absence of Jurrien Timber as particularly damaging for Arsenal's attacking structure.
"You lose a lot when you lose Timber, you lose a lot," Neville stated. "He's a bit of a powerhouse going forward, he links really well. I think losing both of their full-backs would have cost them today in terms of on the ball and being able to get forward."
While acknowledging that injuries are part of football and that Arsenal have adequate replacements for players like Bukayo Saka, Neville maintained that the absence of Timber's specific skill set significantly impacted Arsenal's performance.
Psychological Impact on Title Race
Despite the defeat, Neville found positives in Arsenal's performance, describing it as "the best way that they could have lost" given recent concerns about their mentality in big games.
"I know the big talk before the match was the bottling, the freezing, the anxiety, the nervousness, the pressure... I actually think they handled the occasion very well and that's positive," Neville said. "They didn't come here today and not play, they didn't come here today and have no idea. I thought they played a good game of football."
However, Neville believes Manchester City now have crucial momentum in the title race. "You're up against a juggernaut and that juggernaut is Pep Guardiola. Manchester City have won title after title in these last seven or eight years and they've just stole ahead at the right time, they've got that momentum."
Missed Opportunities Prove Costly
Neville also pointed to specific missed chances that could have changed the outcome for Arsenal, including Eberechi Eze hitting the post and Havertz's late header that went wide.
"I thought Arsenal lost the game because you can lose here. You can play well, do okay in the game and still lose here," Neville continued. "I'm sure Mikel Arteta will point towards chances, Eberechi Eze's one where he hits the post, Havertz's chance at the end... they had really good moments and they've not taken them."
Despite praising Havertz's overall performance, Neville noted that the German international will likely regret his missed opportunity in the closing moments.
Looking Ahead
Arsenal now face the challenge of recovering psychologically from this defeat as they prepare to host out-of-form Newcastle United next weekend. With Manchester City potentially moving ahead in the title race on Wednesday, the pressure on Arteta's side has intensified significantly.
Arteta remained defiant after the match, stating: "It's a new league now. We have three points of advantage, they have the game in hand. Everything is still to play for. We know how much we want it and we are not going to stop!"
How Arsenal responds to this setback, particularly in addressing the full-back limitations highlighted by Neville, could determine their final position in what promises to be a dramatic conclusion to the Premier League season.
