Jose Mourinho, the soon-to-be Real Madrid manager, has placed Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot at the top of his transfer wishlist, according to reports in Spain. Thirteen years after his first stint at the Bernabeu ended, Mourinho is preparing to leave Benfica and return to the Spanish capital, having reportedly reached a verbal agreement on a two-year contract. He is expected to replace Alvaro Arbeloa after the club's final match against Athletic Bilbao this weekend.
Mourinho's Plans for Real Madrid
Mourinho's task extends beyond improving results; he must also address a fractured dressing room that has experienced infighting under Arbeloa's temporary leadership. With Real Madrid set to finish trophyless for a second consecutive season, president Florentino Perez has assured Mourinho of significant transfer funds to strengthen the squad. Earlier this week, Cadena COPE reported that Mourinho had discussed potential incomings and outgoings, with Sporting's Morten Hjulmand emerging as a midfield target. However, the Portuguese coach is keen to reinforce multiple areas, particularly at right-back, given Dani Carvajal's impending departure.
Dalot Identified as Priority
According to SPORT, Mourinho wants additional competition and support for Trent Alexander-Arnold, preferably a more defensive option than the former Liverpool star. The Special One has identified Dalot as the 'priority' on his shortlist, confident that his fellow countryman 'has all the qualities' to succeed at the Bernabeu. The report claims Madrid plans to exploit Manchester United's squad overhaul, as the Red Devils aim to raise funds for a €120 million (£104m) transfer kitty. Dalot 'could be interested in a change of scenery,' and United 'might be open to negotiations,' with the defender's €35m (£21.6m) valuation considered within Madrid's budget.
Mourinho was United's manager when Dalot joined from Porto in June 2018 for £19m, but he was dismissed six months later after spending £400m on 11 first-team players. Since then, Dalot has made 246 appearances for United, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under Erik ten Hag. His current contract runs until June 2028. Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also shown interest in the 27-year-old.
Dalot on Recent Changes at United
In a recent interview, Dalot discussed the squad's adjustment after Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim as manager. 'It's always tough when changing manager, there's a bit of uncertainty,' he said. 'But knowing Michael from before, I knew we'd get a calm person who gives good energy. It helps to have someone who knows the club.' He praised Carrick's coaching staff, including Steve Holland, for their experience and approach. 'The club and Michael did really well to bring them in,' Dalot added.
Real Madrid's pursuit of Dalot underscores Mourinho's intent to rebuild the squad and close the gap on Barcelona. Whether United will sell remains to be seen, but the potential deal could benefit all parties.
