Mark Allen Calls His Career 'Very Disappointing'

Mark Allen, one of snooker's most accomplished players over the past 15 years, has described his career as 'very disappointing' due to the absence of a World Championship title. The Northern Irishman, known as 'The Pistol', has amassed 12 ranking titles, including the UK Championship, the Masters, and two Champion of Champions victories. Only ten players in the history of the sport have won more ranking events than Allen, underscoring his consistent excellence on the professional tour.

However, his record at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield tells a different story. Despite competing at the World Championship for 19 consecutive years, Allen has never reached the final. His best performances came in 2009 and 2023, when he advanced to the semi-finals. Now at 40 years old, he still believes he has time to rectify that gap in his resume.

Allen's Honest Self-Assessment

Reflecting on his career, Allen acknowledged his achievements but emphasised that winning the World Championship remains his ultimate goal. 'I think in the grand scheme of things I've probably still had a decent career,' he said. 'There's probably only 10 players that have won more than me, but I'd still say it's very disappointing. With all great respect to the tournaments I've won – you want to be world champion. That's what you start playing the game for. As a 12-year-old boy starting out I wanted to be world champion – you remember potting that long black to win the World Championship. That fire in my belly is still there. So I'd look back on it as a disappointment, but I'm sure that other people might say I did alright.'

Upcoming Clash with Kyren Wilson

Allen now faces a formidable opponent in Kyren Wilson, who won the World Championship in 2024. The two meet in a second-round match that promises to be a heavyweight battle. Allen advanced by defeating Zhang Anda in his opening match, while Wilson overcame Stan Moody. Wilson, however, has struggled with his equipment, openly expressing frustration with his cue. 'I absolutely hate my cue,' Wilson said. 'It's too flexible at the top, I've got no control, I've got no feel in my hand. I'm just fighting all the time. I'm just trying to dig it out with this one. It's torture, but I'm trying.'

The round of 16 encounter is scheduled over three sessions: Thursday evening, Friday afternoon, and Saturday morning. Allen will look to replicate Wilson's Crucible success, while Wilson aims to overcome his equipment issues to defend his title.
