Manchester United Injury Woes Continue as Key Players Edge Closer to Return
Manchester United will be without several key players as their injury concerns persist, with interim manager Michael Carrick providing updates on the fitness of Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt ahead of their Premier League clash against West Ham United.
Injury Timeline and Expected Returns
The Red Devils remain without English midfielder Mason Mount, Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt, and full-back Patrick Dorgu as they prepare to face West Ham at the London Stadium on Tuesday evening. While Dorgu is sidelined until next month with a hamstring injury, Mount and De Ligt are progressing well in their recovery programmes.
Mason Mount has been absent since his brief appearance as a substitute against Manchester City on January 17th, while Matthijs de Ligt last featured on November 30th as he continues his rehabilitation from a back injury. Both players are pushing for returns, with Carrick indicating that the away fixture against Everton on February 23rd represents a realistic target date, particularly for Mount.
Carrick's Detailed Assessment
Speaking ahead of the West Ham encounter, Carrick offered specific insights into each player's recovery trajectory. 'Mason will be probably not for Tuesday, probably after, but definitely going into the Everton game, he'll be back,' stated the interim manager regarding the midfielder's progress.
Regarding De Ligt's situation, Carrick added: 'Matta, we'll see how he develops over the, you know... the Everton game feels like a long time away at the moment, so we'll see how he develops, but he's positive, he's moving in the right direction, but Mason's a little bit closer than him.'
Impressive Form Under Carrick's Leadership
Manchester United travel to east London in superb form, having won all four matches under Carrick's temporary stewardship. Victories against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham Hotspur have transformed the team's fortunes, making them favourites against a West Ham side battling relegation concerns.
However, Carrick emphasised the need for caution against Nuno Espirito Santo's improving team, who have won three of their last four matches and closed to within three points of safety after a difficult first half of the season.
Psychological Management and Maintaining Momentum
Carrick highlighted the importance of managing his squad's psychology during this successful period, balancing enjoyment of recent victories with maintaining focus for upcoming challenges. 'You've got to enjoy the buzz of winning. You have to,' he explained. 'That's what we're in it for, so you've got to manage the highs of it, and you've got to enjoy it, the feeling of winning a game.'
The interim manager stressed the need for emotional balance: 'You can't kind of just be flatlined at all times. But certainly, going into the next game, you've got to then regroup and prepare again for what's next.'
Upcoming Fixture Schedule
Manchester United face a demanding sequence of Premier League matches in the coming weeks:
- February 10: West Ham (away)
- February 23: Everton (away)
- March 01: Crystal Palace (home)
- March 04: Newcastle (away)
- March 15: Aston Villa (home)
Carrick acknowledged the challenge of maintaining standards: 'The big challenge is knowing what's got you there, and all the hard work and the preparation, and then what it takes to win a game of football at this level. It's tough, so never assume that the next one's just going to be alright.'
The interim manager concluded by praising his squad's attitude: 'The boys have been good with that, though, they've managed it really well, and had the high of the win, come back into training, and focused on the next one, and we've got to keep that going.'
