Manchester City Sign USWNT Star Sam Coffey in £600k WSL Ambition Statement
Man City sign US midfielder Sam Coffey in major WSL deal

Manchester City have made a significant statement of intent in the Women's Super League title race by completing the high-profile signing of United States international midfielder Sam Coffey.

Major Coup for WSL Leaders

The club, currently sitting six points clear at the top of the WSL, have secured the 27-year-old American on a three-and-a-half year deal. The transfer, reportedly costing around $800,000 (£600,000), sees Coffey move from the Portland Thorns, where she was a pivotal figure.

Coffey arrives with a formidable pedigree. A gold medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, she has earned 42 caps for the USA, scoring five goals, and has become a trusted component of Emma Hayes's national team setup. Her club career in the NWSL was also decorated, winning the 2022 NWSL Championship in her debut season with the Thorns.

A Signal of Ambition

Therese Sjögran, Manchester City's director of women's football, emphasised that the acquisition underlines the club's growing stature and future goals. "Sam is playing at the top of her game, and I think her decision to come here shows the incredible progress we've made as a club and the ambitions we have moving forward," Sjögran stated.

She added: "Sam's reputation as one of the world's best speaks for itself, and we're delighted she's chosen to come here ahead of other potential suitors. We believe she has all the qualities needed to thrive at City and, more broadly, the WSL."

Coffey's Excitement for New Challenge

For her part, Coffey expressed clear enthusiasm about the switch to English football. "City really stood out from the get-go," she said. "First and foremost, the style of play, and when I watch the team play the girls look and seem happy, and they seem so close and connected."

The midfielder feels the timing is perfect for a new challenge. "I think I'm at a place in my career where I feel ready and settled in as a pro. It feels like the right time to really challenge myself in this way," Coffey explained. "The fact it's official, I'm here and it's all real and happening is just so exciting, and I couldn't be more ready and happy about everything."

Other WSL News: Agyemang Returns to Arsenal

In related women's football news, young England forward Michelle Agyemang has cut short her loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion. The 19-year-old will continue her rehabilitation from a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury at her parent club, Arsenal.

Agyemang sustained the serious knee injury during England's 3-0 friendly victory over Australia back in October. Her return to North London allows her to focus fully on recovery under the care of Arsenal's medical team.
