Manchester City have reportedly taken a significant step forward in the race to sign AFC Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, dealing a transfer blow to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
City Steal a March in Semenyo Pursuit
According to reports from talkSPORT, the Premier League champions have now held concrete talks regarding a move for the in-form 25-year-old. This development places Pep Guardiola's side as clear frontrunners for his signature when the transfer window reopens on 1st January.
Semenyo's performances have been a standout feature of the early season. The Ghanaian forward has contributed seven goals and three assists in the Premier League, including finding the net in Bournemouth's thrilling 4-4 draw with Manchester United on Monday 18th December.
Release Clause Paves Way for January Exit
A key factor in the potential for a mid-season move is a £60 million release clause embedded in the player's contract. Semenyo only signed a new five-year deal with the Cherries earlier in 2025, but this clause significantly weakens the club's negotiating position.
Manchester City's urgency may be heightened by current injuries to wide players Jeremy Doku and Oscar Bobb. Furthermore, Semenyo's availability is guaranteed for the entire winter period as Ghana failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.
London Clubs Left Playing Catch-Up
The news represents a setback for both North London clubs, who have been extensively linked with the Bournemouth star. Tottenham, under Thomas Frank, are now described as 'outsiders' in the race, despite having funds to spend in January to address a lack of firepower.
Arsenal's situation appears more complex. While maintaining an interest, a move for Semenyo is reportedly contingent on the Gunners offloading a winger first, with a 'quiet transfer window' anticipated at the Emirates Stadium. Liverpool and Manchester United are also said to be actively monitoring the situation.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, speaking in November, attempted to downplay the speculation. "Antoine is our player, he will continue being our player," he stated, expressing a preference to focus on short-term matters rather than future markets.
With Manchester City now making their interest official through talks, the battle for one of the season's most prolific wingers is intensifying, leaving Tottenham and Arsenal with considerable ground to make up.
