Harry Maguire Pinpoints Defensive Flaw in Amorim's Manchester United Reign
Maguire Criticises Man Utd Defence Under Amorim

Maguire Identifies Critical Defensive Weakness in Amorim's Manchester United Tenure

Manchester United fans have endured a turbulent period under former manager Ruben Amorim, but defender Harry Maguire has singled out one specific area of the game that was severely lacking during the Portuguese coach's time at Old Trafford. Amorim's challenging spell in charge, which lasted from November 2024 to January 2026, failed to inspire confidence that the club could recapture its historic success.

A Disappointing Record Under Amorim's Leadership

The statistics from Amorim's reign paint a bleak picture. Across 63 matches in all competitions, Manchester United managed just 24 victories, resulting in a meagre win percentage of 38.10. This period was characterised by inconsistent performances and a palpable lack of progress, leaving supporters frustrated and the team adrift from the Premier League's elite.

Carrick's Immediate Impact and Tactical Revival

Since Michael Carrick assumed interim control until the season's end, the atmosphere has transformed dramatically. The former United midfielder has overseen an impressive run of four consecutive victories against formidable opponents: Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham, and Tottenham Hotspur. During this resurgence, the team has netted 10 goals, showcasing a revitalised attacking threat.

However, Maguire emphasises that the improvement extends far beyond the final third. Speaking to former United star Owen Hargreaves for TNT Sports, the England international pinpointed a fundamental defensive issue that has been swiftly addressed under the new management.

Defending the Penalty Area: From Weakness to Strength

"I think that's the main thing that's improved over the last three games. We've defended our box a lot better with a lot more urgency," Maguire stated. "Previously we defended our box nowhere near good enough, every time the ball went in the box they had a chance."

He elaborated on the collective effort required, noting: "But the last three games, loads more urgency. Not just from the defenders, from the midfielders, the wide men getting back in, the strikers protecting the edge of the box, I think it's so important we do it as a team."

Tactical Flexibility and Confidence Restored

Maguire also praised Carrick for instilling greater tactical adaptability and self-assurance, both in and out of possession—qualities frequently criticised during Amorim's tenure. "I think we've got to be comfortable to be dominant with the ball but also without the ball and also be a threat," he explained. "We also know we're going to be a threat on the counter-attack with our players."

The defender highlighted the importance of strategic versatility, drawing parallels with the club's illustrious past: "I'm sure under Sir Alex [Ferguson] you went after some teams and you were happy in the mid block and happy defending low. I think Michael will bring that."

He added: "I think there'll be times going man-for-man all over the pitch and be really aggressive. There'll also be times we'll be happy and content keeping the spaces short and punishing teams on the counter-attack. I think it's important to be tactically flexible."

Looking Ahead: West Ham Clash and League Position

Manchester United now aim to extend their winning streak to five matches as they prepare to face West Ham United in the Premier League on Tuesday evening. A victory for Carrick's side would propel them into third place in the table, at least temporarily, pending Aston Villa's fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion the following night.

This renewed defensive solidity, coupled with an enhanced tactical approach, offers a glimmer of hope for United supporters yearning for a return to the club's former heights.
