Myles Lewis-Skelly Rises in Arsenal Midfield After Adversity
Lewis-Skelly Climbs Arsenal Midfield Pecking Order

Myles Lewis-Skelly has abruptly climbed in Arsenal's midfield pecking order, transforming his season after a period of frustration. The 19-year-old, who broke into the first team as a left-back, has now established himself in central midfield at a crucial stage of the campaign.

A Dramatic Turnaround

Lewis-Skelly described the sense of relief after Arsenal's 1-0 win over West Ham, which moved them five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League with two matches remaining. The victory was sealed after a late West Ham equalizer was disallowed for a foul on goalkeeper David Raya, a decision that drew hyperbolic praise from club legend Ian Wright.

“It is just a huge sense of relief,” Lewis-Skelly said. “Joy, excitement, fulfilment – everything you can describe. We are buzzing, but we know that the job is not done.”

Overcoming Adversity

The teenager's season had been marked by limited playing time and a loss of his England spot. After being recalled by Mikel Arteta for a match against Bournemouth, which ended in defeat, Lewis-Skelly faced a critical test of his mental strength.

“It was tough for me initially,” he admitted. “But I pride myself on having mental strength. Sport is not one pathway because there are ups and downs. It’s how you bounce back from that, how you are in those moments when you face adversity.”

He credited his family and friends for helping him block out social media noise and stay focused. “I just told them: ‘I don’t want to hear all the noise... Let me stay in this moment, let me continue to face this adversity and let me come out the other side of it.’”

Midfield Role Unlocked

Arteta's decision to start Lewis-Skelly in midfield against Fulham nine days ago proved pivotal. The player, who had previously been used as a left-back, delivered a driving performance in a 3-0 win that reignited his season. He has since started in midfield against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League and at West Ham.

“It feels so natural for me to be there,” Lewis-Skelly said. “I have been training there a lot so I felt comfortable. The boss told me: ‘You are going to play midfield, so go for it.’ That is what I did.”

Competition and Future

Lewis-Skelly has now climbed above Martín Zubimendi in the midfield pecking order, though he faces competition from captain Martin Ødegaard. When Ødegaard came on as a substitute against West Ham, Lewis-Skelly moved to left-back, showing his versatility.

Despite speculation about his future amid financial pressures, Lewis-Skelly remains focused on the title race. “I am focused on the games we have got coming up,” he said. “And bringing this club back to glory.”
