Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has emerged as the best-selling physical game in the UK, outselling Forza Horizon 6 and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. The brick-based caped crusader debuted at number one on this week's chart, according to GfK data, despite launching a day later than its competitors.
May's Heated Sales Battle
May has been a stacked month for new game releases, with 007 First Light and Mina the Hollower still to come before Summer Game Fest. However, the biggest titles all launched in the same week: Forza Horizon 6 on May 19, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on May 22, and Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight on May 23. This has led to a fierce sales battle, with Lego Batman ultimately taking the top spot.
Physical Sales Highlights
Forza Horizon 6's high position is notable given that the chart only accounts for physical sales. Xbox games typically sell poorly at retail due to Xbox Game Pass, making this a rare occurrence. Christopher Dring, co-founder of The Game Business, noted on X that the last Xbox game to crack the top five was Starfield in 2023, which also had a physical PC version. He commented, "In a very rare sight, a new Xbox exclusive (Forza Horizon 6) outside a new Nintendo exclusive (Yoshi) in the physical UK last week. Emphasis on the physical. Don't see that very often."
Dring added, "Forza is mega. But Xbox games don't typically sell much at physical retail. The last one to even break the Top Five was Starfield. The majority of Xbox game sales are digital. For Nintendo, it's almost exactly the reverse. The majority of sales are via physical stores."
Nintendo's Performance
Nintendo games usually sell well at retail because they target families. While Yoshi and the Mysterious Book was never expected to match Mario or Zelda sales, its third-place finish may disappoint Nintendo. However, Dring noted that only 300 units separated Forza Horizon 6 and Yoshi, and the latter is currently number one on the Nintendo eShop, suggesting solid overall performance. The game's weak marketing campaign, which made it seem aimed only at very young children, may have hurt physical sales. In reality, it offers a nuanced and involved experience, making it one of the best exclusives on Switch 2.
