Jaap Stam has questioned Manchester United's decision to abandon their pursuit of Harry Kane three years ago, insisting the striker was and remains the type of player the club needs to return to the top of English football. United had long admired Kane and targeted him in the summer of 2023 after Cristiano Ronaldo's departure. However, the club cooled their interest, reluctant to enter a bidding war and aware that Kane's Champions League ambitions might steer him elsewhere.
Kane ended his 19-year stint at Tottenham to join Bayern Munich for a record £95 million. Since then, he has scored 140 goals and provided 33 assists in 145 appearances, cementing his status as one of the world's most lethal attackers. That same summer, United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta for £38 million, but the Danish forward struggled in his first two seasons and was loaned to Napoli last summer.
Stam's Regret Over Missed Opportunity
Speaking to ComeOn, Stam expressed lingering regret over the missed opportunity. 'He was linked to Manchester United once, and we keep thinking about that, but we don't want to dwell on it anymore,' the former United defender said. 'However, he is the type of player we needed to score goals because, in every aspect, a striker needs to play like that.'
Kane's Bayern were eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals this season by PSG, losing 6-5 on aggregate. Stam believes the defeat will fuel Kane's desire to win silverware. 'I think Harry Kane needs to win a major trophy as an individual,' Stam added. 'Considering his character and great personality, he really needs to win a trophy. To me, he looks like the type of guy you want to see win a trophy because of his attitude.'
Potential Leao Swap and Mainoo's Resurgence
United have been linked with AC Milan winger Rafael Leao. Stam acknowledged Leao's potential but stressed the need to assess his mentality. 'Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work,' Stam said. 'You need to look not only at the skill but also at the mentality of players. You need to consider the whole picture and what's best for the long term.'
Stam also praised Kobbie Mainoo's resurgence under Michael Carrick. Mainoo was frozen out by former manager Ruben Amorim but has since signed a new contract. 'Kobbie Mainoo staying will be a great signing,' Stam said. 'He's technically good, has a bright idea about attacking football, and has learned a lot from a hard period. I'm very happy he will sign a new deal.'
Midfield Reinforcements Needed
United are expected to prioritize central midfield in the summer transfer window. Stam believes two new midfielders may be required. 'Everybody talks about replacing Casemiro, who had a great season,' Stam said. 'They need to bring in one, or perhaps even two, extra midfield players who have the legs and ability on the ball to guide the team alongside Kobbie Mainoo. This would allow Bruno Fernandes to play as a No.10. If you qualify for the Champions League, your squad needs to be strengthened.'
