The Flat season is in full swing following Bow Echo's impressive 2,000 Guineas victory, and attention now turns to Ascot's Victoria Cup this Saturday. The race, a competitive betting heat, features several promising contenders, including the progressive Mudbir at 7/1. However, value may lie with two horses at bigger prices.
Hickory Seeks Repeat Victory
Hickory, last year's winner, returns with a 10-pound weight rise but boasts strong Ascot form. He has won twice at the track and placed five times, and he performs well fresh. Trainer Jamie Osborne and jockey Saffie Osborne are in fine form after a Guineas Day double, making Hickory an attractive each-way bet at around 14/1.
Tuco Salamanca on the Rise
Tuco Salamanca, trained by Ollie Sangster, has shown improvement with two wins last summer and a successful reappearance at Kempton in March. Jockey Billy Loughnane, fresh from his first Classic win in the 2,000 Guineas, rides. The step up to seven furlongs should suit, and 14/1 offers good each-way value.
Swinton Handicap Hurdle at Haydock
Jump racing also features this weekend with the Swinton Handicap Hurdle at Haydock (1.15pm). The Dan and Harry Skelton team, dominant in National Hunt, have a strong contender in Tellherthename. Lightly raced and talented, he ran well in the County Hurdle despite being ridden cold. After a non-runner in the Scottish Champion Hurdle due to going, the Skeltons have targeted this race, and 4/1 is a solid price.
Pointers for Saturday
- Tellherthename – 1.15pm, Haydock
- Hickory (each-way) – 2.20pm, Ascot
- Tuco Salamanca (each-way) – 2.20pm, Ascot
