Harry Kane described himself as 'gutted' after England's World Cup semifinal exit, with Argentina scoring twice in the final minutes to win 2-1 in Atlanta. The defending champions will now face Spain in Sunday's final.
Late comeback stuns England
Anthony Gordon had given England the lead, but Argentina pushed for an equaliser and the pressure eventually led to Enzo Fernández scoring in the 85th minute. Substitute Lautaro Martínez headed the winner two minutes into injury time.
“I think there's not much to say. For now, everyone has to process what's just happened,” Kane said after the match. “Everyone's gutted. I'm gutted for all the boys, all the staff, everyone behind the scenes, because we know how much everyone puts into being a successful national team.”
Devastation in the dressing room
Kane highlighted the emotional toll of the loss. “When you're so close, when you're 10-plus minutes away and it slips out of your hands like that, obviously, the lads are devastated,” he said. England were minutes from a second consecutive World Cup final appearance but were undone by a late Argentina surge led by Lionel Messi.
Argentina's path to the final
The victory extends Argentina's unbeaten run in the tournament and sets up a final clash with Spain. For England, the defeat marks a heartbreaking end to a campaign that had raised hopes of a first World Cup title since 1966.
