Denise Fox's Cancer Treatment Fails
Denise Fox (Diane Parish) has faced yet another devastating blow in EastEnders as her chemotherapy treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) failed to eradicate the cancer. The Fox-Trueman matriarch, who has endured two decades of trauma in Walford, must now undergo further treatment while grappling with the death of a hospital friend and a confrontation with sinister Sheila Atkins.
Denise initially kept her diagnosis secret, but broke down to Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) after a consultant begged her to return to hospital urgently. She delayed treatment to support daughter Chelsea (Zaraah Abrahams), whose son Jordan (Jahsaiah Williams) had been hit by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt). When she finally revealed the truth to partner Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) and her family, neither Chelsea nor returning daughter Libby (Belinda Owusu) were matches for a transplant.
A History of Hardship
Denise's life has been marked by relentless suffering. She survived an abusive relationship with alcoholic Owen Turner (Lee Ross), then lost fiancé Kevin Wicks (Phil Daniels) to death. Her next engagement was to serial killer vicar Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet), who imprisoned her in a basement and told her family she had died. She endured extreme poverty, nearly starving and scavenging from bins. After a fling with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), she gave birth and heartbreakingly placed the boy for adoption, later fighting to get him back from his gangster grandmother. A love triangle with Jack Branning and Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) followed, as did psychosis after involvement in Keanu Taylor's (Danny Walters) death. She also nearly married Ian Beale, a fate many consider the worst of all.
Sheila Atkins Arrives
While Denise was in hospital, the family dealt with the emergence of Sheila Atkins (Sheila Ruskin), the grandmother of Jordan's father – crazed serial killer Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith). Sheila used generous cash donations to disarm Chelsea, Kim Fox (Tameka Empson), and Howie Danes (Delroy Hugh Atkinson). Returning home, Denise hid that her treatment had not worked. She then learned that hospital friend Teyana (Denise Pitter) had died and confronted Sheila.
Emotional Goodbye Party
In today's episode, Denise admitted to Jack that the chemo had failed, swearing him to secrecy as Libby announced plans to return home. Despite Jack's fears of cross-contamination, Denise welcomed the family for a goodbye party to watch football. Joy came when Jordan moved his foot, showing recovery progress. Denise bid Libby an emotional farewell and declared to Jack: 'I will beat this cancer.'
As Denise vows to continue fighting, fans are left wondering what further obstacles await her – including a mysterious blonde figure. According to Metro, the storyline has been praised for its raw and realistic portrayal of cancer, but viewers are calling for a break for the long-suffering character.
