Police arrived in Emmerdale village during the July 16 episode, heading to Tug Ghyll to speak with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) as part of an investigation into Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker). DS Reid (Angela Lonsdale) and her colleague informed Vanessa that an allegation had been made against Caitlin but could not reveal details. The visit followed Caitlin's arrest for sexually assaulting Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins).
Doctor Todd's assault and release
Caitlin sexually assaulted Charity, leading to her arrest and questioning by DS Reid. During the interview, Caitlin claimed the sex was consensual. Due to a lack of physical evidence, she was released shortly after. Charity struggled with the trauma, initially keeping it secret from loved ones. She eventually told partner Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) about the assault and revealed that baby Leyla is her child, which Caitlin had been using for blackmail.
Charity reports blackmail
Mackenzie encouraged Charity to tell DS Reid about the blackmail, believing it could aid the investigation. Charity did so but learned from Reid that the coercion would be treated as a separate case, not part of the sexual assault investigation. To build a fuller picture of Doctor Todd, DS Reid decided to speak with Vanessa, Caitlin's ex-girlfriend.
Vanessa's shock discovery
After the police conversation, Vanessa rushed to the shop, initially believing Doctor Todd had been questioned about bullying Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant). Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) speculated that the allegation might involve something else. Charity, overhearing, reacted in a way that piqued Vanessa's curiosity. Later at Jacobs Fold, Vanessa directly asked Charity if Caitlin had done something to her. Charity's expression confirmed it. Charity then told Vanessa about the sexual assault and received strong support from her ex. Reeling from shock, Vanessa could not believe she had been oblivious to Doctor Todd's true nature.
Murder twist ahead
A flashforward has confirmed that Caitlin will not go to prison for her crimes against Charity, as the character will be murdered. This raises the question of whether Vanessa, now knowing the truth, could be the one to kill her.
