Football Superstar Erling Haaland Makes Strategic Move Into Chess Investment

Manchester City and Norway striker Erling Haaland has made a significant off-field investment by backing Norway Chess and its innovative Total Chess World Championship Tour. This move places him alongside fellow Premier League footballers who have recently shown support for the ancient game of strategy.

Following the Lead of Football's Chess Enthusiasts

Haaland joins a growing list of elite footballers embracing chess. Arsenal midfielder Eberechi Eze recently won $20,000 in an online chess tournament, while Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has publicly described himself as "addicted" to the cerebral game. This trend highlights the natural parallels between football and chess that appeal to top athletes.

"Chess is an incredible game, there are clear similarities to football," Haaland explained. "You have to think quickly, trust your instincts, and think several moves ahead."

The Total Chess World Championship Tour Structure

The investment supports a comprehensive chess championship with ambitious plans:

  • An inaugural tournament scheduled for late 2026
  • A full championship season launching in 2027
  • Four annual tournaments across different global cities
  • Three distinct formats: Blitz, Rapid, and Classical chess
  • An annual prize pool of $2.7 million

Notably, five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen, a known football enthusiast, is set to participate in the new competition.

Haaland's Vision for Chess Expansion

The Norwegian striker, who invested alongside business leader Morten Borge, sees significant potential for chess's growth as a spectator sport. "I'm investing in Norway chess because I believe the new Total Chess World Championship Tour can turn chess into an even bigger sport for spectators around the world," Haaland stated.

This represents Haaland's latest strategic investment, following previous ventures into recovery technology company Hyperice and Scandinavian luxury travel brand Db.

Digital Growth and Audience Expansion

Chess has experienced remarkable digital growth since the pandemic, with content creators like GothamChess and grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura collectively commanding over 10 million subscribers. Haaland's global profile, including his YouTube channel with more than 1 million subscribers, could provide additional momentum for this expansion.

Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Total Chess, expressed confidence in Haaland's impact: "I am absolutely certain he will bring tremendous value, help generate increased interest in the fascinating world of chess, and attract new audiences."

The convergence of elite football talent and competitive chess represents a new frontier in sports investment, with Haaland positioning himself at the forefront of this strategic movement.
