GTA 6 Cover Art Sparks Betrayal Theory Among Fans

GTA 6 fans believe the game's cover art could be hiding a plot spoiler, as they scour for references to the classic GTA: Vice City. Rockstar's reveal of the cover may have hinted at the fate of a key character, sparking intense speculation.

Rockstar debuted the cover on June 18 and confirmed that pre-orders for the highly anticipated sequel will start on June 25. The cover also showcased a new look at the revamped Vice City, the same Miami-inspired location used in 2002's GTA: Vice City.

While little is known about GTA 6 aside from the central protagonists Jason and Lucia, some fans believe the cover could contain a spoiler for the game's story. As highlighted by fan account GTA 6 Countdown on X, the clothing worn by character Raul Bautista on the cover—a white jacket and purple shirt combo—is identical to what Lance Vance wears in GTA: Vice City.

Some fans interpret this as a cheeky nod, but others have taken speculation further. In GTA: Vice City, Lance Vance betrays protagonist Tommy Vercetti in the campaign's final mission. As a result, some believe that Raul could betray Jason and Lucia in GTA 6.

“Please don’t let my boy Raul be a traitor,” one person wrote on X. Another added, “Could be a deliberate detail to signal he will betray Jason and Lucia at some point, though not sure.” However, some think Rockstar might be intentionally misleading fans. “Watch him being one of the few characters to stay loyal to the very end,” another wrote.

Rockstar has a history of leaving breadcrumbs for fans, but this detail might be too obvious, especially since the betrayal in GTA: Vice City was one of the most memorable parts of the story. Based on the game's plot synopsis, some form of betrayal seems likely. The synopsis on Rockstar's website reads: “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida—forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.”

Further GTA 6 speculation includes a Redditor questioning the accuracy of an alligator's teeth on the cover and another asking why a helicopter always appears in the top left corner of every GTA cover. GTA 6 is set to launch worldwide on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
