Ryan Giggs Endorses Michael Carrick for Manchester United Managerial Role
Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs has publicly endorsed Michael Carrick to assume the permanent managerial position at Old Trafford. Giggs, speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, praised Carrick's quiet yet strong personality and his immediate impact since returning to the club in January following Ruben Amorim's unexpected departure.
Carrick's Impact and United's Resurgence
Under Carrick's interim leadership, Manchester United secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, rebounding from a shocking defeat to Leeds earlier in the week. This win significantly bolstered United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League, a prospect that seemed highly uncertain when Carrick took over. Without any new signings in the transfer window, Carrick has revitalized the team with consecutive wins against Manchester City and Arsenal, implementing a pass-and-move style that Giggs describes as "the United way."
Giggs highlighted the tactical improvements, noting, "The way we played against Manchester City, that's the United way—pass and move, pass and move. When you get the ball into the dribblers, you can make things happen, that's when you can take risks." He emphasized that United's philosophy has always centered on ball speed over player speed, a principle evident in recent performances.
Giggs Calls for Rasmus Hojlund's Return
If appointed permanently, Carrick will face critical decisions regarding players currently on loan, including high-profile names like Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Giggs believes both England internationals might benefit from leaving the club, but he advocates for giving Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund a second chance. Hojlund, a £72 million signing, has struggled since joining United, but Giggs argues he was unfairly treated under previous managers Erik ten Hag and Amorim.
"Maybe Hojlund, maybe," Giggs said when asked which players he would retain. "I thought he was unlucky; he was just the only centre forward at the club. Everyone expected him to come in and do great. I think Sesko gets more chances and scores more goals. But you never know, if you've got two young, hungry centre forwards up front and say fight it out."
Giggs suggested that competition in training could unlock Hojlund's potential, recalling United's historical strength in fostering such environments. "You see at United that's always been a strength. I say training is harder than the games; if you've got United centre halves at one end marking Sesko, it's going to be competitive."
Looking Ahead to the Future
Giggs expressed optimism about Carrick's long-term prospects, stating, "Let's see what he can do with a pre-season and getting the players he wants." As United continues its push for Champions League qualification, the potential managerial appointment and player decisions will be pivotal in shaping the club's future trajectory. The endorsement from a legend like Giggs adds significant weight to Carrick's candidacy and highlights the ongoing debate over United's squad management.
