Barcelona Star Joan Garcia Hails Arsenal's David Raya as World's Best Goalkeeper
Barcelona and Spain goalkeeper Joan Garcia has made a bold declaration, stating that his international teammate David Raya of Arsenal is currently the best goalkeeper in the world. Garcia, who recently earned his first senior call-ups to the Spanish national team for friendlies against Serbia and Egypt, shared his high praise during the national team training camp.
Garcia's Praise for Raya's Premier League Form
Speaking to El Larguero, Garcia emphasized Raya's exceptional performance this season. "Right now, I like David Raya," Garcia said when asked about the world's top goalkeeper. "He's having a fantastic season in the Premier League. He's under immense pressure with set-pieces, his footwork... He's playing at a very high level and I'm really enjoying watching him."
Garcia, who attracted interest from Arsenal last summer, highlighted Raya's bravery and technical skills, noting his ability to help the team in various ways. This endorsement comes as Garcia aims to compete with Raya, Unai Simon, and Alex Remiro for Spain's number one jersey under coach Luis de la Fuente.
Spain's Competitive Goalkeeping Squad
Currently, Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simon is viewed as De la Fuente's first choice, having started throughout Spain's World Cup qualifying campaign. However, Garcia dismissed any notion of rivalry among the Spanish goalkeepers. "No, not at all," he stated. "We're four top-class goalkeepers and each of us will try to do our best. There's nothing like that."
Garcia also praised his other teammates, acknowledging Simon's calm demeanor and Remiro's quick reflexes. "Regarding Unai Simon, I'd say that the calm and tranquility he exudes is very important. Unai does that. As for Remiro, among many other things, I like how quick he is between the posts and with his feet. He's very good too."
Controversy Surrounding Arsenal's Goalkeeping Decisions
Garcia's comments follow a controversial decision by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta in the Carabao Cup final, where Raya was benched in favor of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat, with Kepa's mistake contributing to Manchester City's opening goal, sparking criticism from pundits like Jamie Redknapp.
Redknapp argued on Sky Sports that Arteta's choice was a "monumental error," emphasizing Raya's superiority. "I know people will say it's sentiment and he played in the earlier rounds, but Kepa is not as good as Raya. That's why he is the number two," Redknapp said. "So why, in a major cup final when you're trying to get across the line and you've not won a trophy in so long, do you decide to play him? You have to take responsibility for that."
This debate underscores the high stakes in top-level football, where goalkeeping decisions can significantly impact match outcomes. Garcia's endorsement adds to Raya's growing reputation as a world-class talent, further fueling discussions about Spain's goalkeeping hierarchy and Arsenal's strategic choices.
