Fowler's Scathing Verdict on United's Big-Money Signing
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has launched a stunning critique of Manchester United's £74 million summer signing Benjamin Šeško, bluntly stating the Slovenian striker currently resembles an academy player rather than a marquee acquisition. The former England international expressed his significant doubts about the 22-year-old's adaptation to English football following a subdued start to his Old Trafford career.
A Struggle for Goals and Game Time
Since his high-profile move from RB Leipzig last summer, Šeško has managed just two goals in eleven appearances across all competitions for Ruben Amorim's side. The striker has frequently been relegated to substitute appearances during United's most crucial fixtures this season, failing to secure a consistent starting role.
United's pursuit of Šeško came after their primary target, Viktor Gyökeres, opted to join Arsenal in a £64 million deal. The Swedish international, familiar with Amorim's system from their time together at Sporting, has subsequently netted four times in ten league outings for the Gunners.
Gyökeres Deemed 'Better Equipped' for Premier League
When questioned about which striker had adapted more effectively to the Premier League, Fowler left no room for ambiguity in his assessment. 'For me I think the obvious one is Gyökeres,' Fowler told Adventure Gamers. 'He's probably better suited to the Premier League and he understands what is needed in terms of speed, energy and commitment.'
Contrasting the two forwards, Fowler elaborated on Šeško's difficulties. 'Whereas Šeško has probably struggled a little at times. He looks a little bit, I hope this doesn't come across wrong, but he looks a bit of an academy player. I have no doubt he's a good player. No one's questioning his ability, but at the minute I think out of those two it's Gyökeres by far who looks better equipped.'
Shearer Joins Criticism of 'Excessive' Transfer Fee
Fowler is not alone in his scepticism. Premier League record goalscorer Alan Shearer has also voiced concerns, specifically regarding the substantial £74 million transfer fee – the fifth-largest in United's history – which he believes already appears excessive.
'They paid 70 odd million for him,' Shearer told Betfair. 'That was a lot of money, I know it's the market but it was too much. He's had a tough start and I don't expect huge things from him to be honest. I think he's a good player but I'm not sure he's any more than that. He should have scored a couple more goals than he has so far.'
Injury Setback Compounds Difficult Start
Šeško's challenging introduction to English football has been further complicated by injury. The striker was forced off with a knee problem during United's 2-2 draw with Tottenham before the international break.
While the club is yet to issue an official statement, early reports indicate Šeško has avoided a serious ligament injury and is expected to be sidelined for no more than a month. His absence comes during a demanding fixture schedule for the Red Devils, who face Everton, Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Wolves in a congested period.
