Phil Foden has agreed in principle to a new four-year contract with Manchester City, securing his future at the club until 2030 despite a recent dip in form and reduced playing time. The 25-year-old, who has spent his entire career at City, will see his current deal, set to expire in summer 2027, extended with an additional 12-month option.
Contract Details and Current Form
Although the formalities have not yet been completed, no issues are anticipated. The new contract comes as Foden has lost his regular starting spot under manager Pep Guardiola. He was only a late substitute in Monday night's 3-3 draw at Everton, and his last Premier League start was in the 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest on 4 March.
Impact on England Prospects
Foden's lack of game time and below-par performances have put his selection for England's summer World Cup campaign under Thomas Tuchel in doubt. Guardiola has consistently backed Foden to return to his best, but the player's form has fallen away since he was a key part of City's 2023-24 title success, during which he won both the Football Writers' Association and Professional Footballers' Association player of the year awards.
Foden, an academy graduate, has been with City his whole career, and this new deal underscores the club's long-term commitment to him despite his current struggles.
