Cesc Fabregas' Managerial Success Sparks Premier League Speculation
Como president Mirwan Suwarso has openly admitted that he would be "stupid" not to consider the possibility of Cesc Fabregas departing the Italian club to manage one of his former Premier League giants, Arsenal or Chelsea. The legendary Spanish midfielder has been making waves in his first senior managerial role, leading Como to unprecedented heights in Serie A.
Impressive Start to Managerial Career
Fabregas, who took charge of Como after initially joining as an assistant, has overseen a remarkable transformation at the club. In his debut season, he guided the team to a ninth-place finish in Serie A, their best performance since 1987. This campaign has been even more impressive, with Como currently sitting in fourth position with just nine games remaining, putting them in contention for a coveted Champions League spot.
"Cesc is really very important for us, but we would be stupid not to think that one day he could go to Arsenal, Barcelona or Chelsea," Suwarso told Italian outlet Revista Undici. "If he continues to win with us or in any case to be successful, even if I cannot speak for him, I believe he could have bigger dreams."
Fabregas' Storied Playing Career
The former Spain international boasts an illustrious playing career that makes him an attractive candidate for top managerial positions:
- Joined Arsenal from Barcelona's academy at age 16, becoming one of the Gunners' greatest midfielders
- Returned to Barcelona in 2011, winning La Liga, two domestic cups, and the Club World Cup
- Enjoyed his most successful period at Chelsea from 2014-2019, winning two Premier League titles, two domestic cups, and the Europa League
Current Managerial Landscape at Potential Destinations
The speculation comes at an interesting time for both London clubs. While Mikel Arteta enjoys stability and success at Arsenal, with the Gunners competing for multiple trophies including their first Premier League title since 2004, Chelsea's situation appears more volatile. New manager Liam Rosenior is reportedly already under pressure with Chelsea outside the top four and facing Champions League elimination.
Barcelona, another club mentioned by Suwarso, seems less likely as an immediate destination with Hansi Flick recently confirming a contract extension that will keep him at the Nou Camp until 2028.
Como's Future Planning
Despite acknowledging Fabregas' potential departure, Suwarso emphasized the importance of the manager's involvement in Como's long-term planning. "Having said that, I hope that as long as he is here he will help us create a success plan also for those who will have to replace him," the president stated. "For me, when he leaves, if he ever leaves, he should be the one to choose who will take his place. He should be involved in the choice."
Como recently boosted their Champions League hopes with a 2-1 victory over Roma and face struggling Pisa in their next Serie A fixture. Fabregas' continued success with the Italian club will only intensify speculation about a potential return to the Premier League dugout, particularly at clubs where he enjoyed legendary playing careers.
