Substitute Esposito Seals Vital Win for Serie A Leaders
Inter Milan secured a potentially pivotal victory in the Serie A title race, grinding out a 1-0 win over a stubborn Lecce at the San Siro. The decisive moment arrived in the 78th minute when substitute striker Francesco Pio Esposito reacted quickest to a saved shot, slamming home the rebound to send the home crowd into raptures.
The league leaders had laboured for large periods against a well-organised and defensive Lecce side. With first-choice striker Lautaro Martínez rested, Ange-Yoan Bonny led the line and had an early penalty appeal waved away after a VAR check. Inter created chances, with Nicolò Barella and Andy Diouf testing Lecce goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone, but a breakthrough proved elusive.
The introduction of Esposito and then Martínez from the bench injected fresh impetus. It was the experienced Martínez who forced Falcone into a save with a volley, and the 20-year-old Esposito was perfectly positioned to fire in the loose ball. The victory moves Inter six points clear of rivals AC Milan and Napoli at the Serie A summit.
Napoli Stumble Again as Bayern Make History
Elsewhere in Italy, Napoli's title hopes suffered another blow as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Parma. It was a third consecutive league draw for the Neapolitans, who struggled to break down a resilient Parma defence. Goalkeeper Filippo Rinaldi, making his senior club debut, was in inspired form, making crucial saves from Alessandro Buongiorno and Rasmus Højlund.
In Germany, Bayern Munich set a new Bundesliga record for the best first half of a season after coming from behind to beat Cologne 3-1. Despite their 8-1 demolition of Wolfsburg days earlier, Bayern fell behind to a spectacular solo goal from Linton Maina just before half-time. Serge Gnabry's clever flick restored parity moments later.
Bayern completed the turnaround in the second half, with defender Kim Min-jae heading home in the 71st minute before teenager Lennart Karl sealed the points late on. The win gives Vincent Kompany's side 47 points from 17 matches with a staggering goal difference of +53, surpassing the previous best mark set by Pep Guardiola's Bayern in 2013-14.
Implications for the Title Races
Inter's hard-fought win could prove a significant psychological blow in a tight Serie A campaign. Midfielder Carlos Augusto hailed the "great team victory," emphasising the readiness of every squad member. With Milan facing a difficult trip to Como and Napoli dropping more points, the momentum is firmly with the Nerazzurri.
In the Bundesliga, Bayern's record-breaking form has established an 11-point lead over Borussia Dortmund. Manager Vincent Kompany, however, was quick to downplay the achievement, stating, "We are in the middle of the season and have not won any title yet. From tomorrow, we start the second half and everything starts from zero."
The weekend's results have sharply defined the landscape at the top of two of Europe's major leagues, setting the stage for a compelling second half of the season.
