More than 8,000 fans packed into Castlefield Bowl in Manchester to watch England face Argentina in the World Cup semi-final, hoping to end a 60-year wait for a men's final. But Argentina's two second-half goals dashed those dreams.
Match atmosphere and fan reactions
Before the match, Elham Moghimi, 31, and Joe Jones, 29, expressed nervousness. 'We've usually not had great luck, but there's a lot to play for,' Moghimi said, noting the psychological challenge of facing Lionel Messi. Jones added, 'If it doesn't go well, this is the worst team to lose against.'
Olivia Crabtree, 25, was optimistic: 'The energy feels different in England and we're definitely going to win tonight.'
During a foul-filled first half with no goals, boos rang out. Millie Smith, 25, said, 'It's been a very dirty game, and nothing's been given to them.'
Second half drama
England scored early in the second half, sparking a deafening roar and a rendition of 'Don't Take Me Home.' Maria De Napoli, 32, who moved from Venezuela seven years ago, said, 'It's been amazing. I am celebrating this culture that has made me feel at home.'
But Argentina's comeback silenced the crowd. Christian McElis, 26, a chemical engineering student, said, 'It's a complete shock. Even if we get penalties, I'll feel pretty shit inside.'
Reactions after defeat
Raf Bari, 36, a lawyer, felt England hadn't impressed throughout the tournament. 'If we played any other top five team, they would've destroyed us. But we managed to reach the semi-final.'
Lucas Clapham, 25, shrugged: 'I'm just happy we've made it this far. We've got to enjoy such a long period in this tournament.'
Rachael Judge, 30, who sat outside the venue with friends, said, 'I was crying when we lost. But we go again in four years.' Connor Ford added, 'People celebrated too early, but the players should be proud.'
