Emmerdale's Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) has taken his revenge against Ross Barton to a deadly extreme, leaving Ross for dead after a violent showdown at the farm. The confrontation comes after Mack discovered that Ross, his best friend, had slept with his wife Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and knew about the true paternity of her baby.
Mack's betrayal and anger
Mack's world was shattered when he learned not only of Charity's infidelity but also that Ross had been complicit in the deception. While Mack has tried to support Charity through her rape case, his anger towards Ross has festered. After confiding in Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill), Mack sought revenge, first targeting Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker), Charity's rapist, but that only led to a police visit for threatening to kill her.
Now, Mack's focus has shifted to Ross. The pair became close friends around the time Charity got pregnant, adding to Mack's sense of betrayal. Actor Lawrence Robb explained: 'Mack feels deeply betrayed by Ross. They were becoming close friends, so learning that Ross knew about Leyla feels like a big betrayal. While he might understand Charity's motivations better due to his love for her, the betrayal from Ross is harder to reconcile.'
The farm confrontation
Mack asks Ross to help him at the farm, but he has a revenge plan in mind. Ross senses something is off but his cockiness leads him to believe he can handle whatever Mack throws at him. Lawrence described Mack's mindset: 'Mack doesn't have a calculated plan. He's driven by pure instinct and a desperate need to get Ross alone to confront him. He wants the truth – he wants to hear it straight from the horse's mouth. What happens at the farm, however, is not premeditated. It's a volatile situation that spirals very quickly.'
As they work together loading bags from a trailer, the tension escalates into violence. On the mezzanine of the barn, Mack shoves Ross hard, and gravity does the rest, leaving Ross for dead. With Dr Todd already found dead in a pool of her own blood, the question remains: has Mack taken his revenge too far?
