Arsenal's midfield lynchpin Declan Rice has been named as a potential surprise target for Spanish giants Real Madrid by former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta.
Mendieta's High Praise for Rice
The speculation emerged after Mendieta, who earned 40 caps for Spain between 1999 and 2002, highlighted the England star's growing reputation in Spain during an interview with BOYLE Sports. Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham in a £105 million deal in July 2023, has cemented his status as one of the world's elite midfielders in north London.
However, Mendieta suggested that Rice's future could hinge on Arsenal's ability to secure major silverware. The 26-year-old's only honour with the club so far is the 2023 Community Shield. "He is in a good place at Arsenal and he will be hoping he can add major honours to his trophy cabinet this season," Mendieta stated.
The Real Madrid Connection
Rice's profile in Spain was significantly boosted by his phenomenal performance against Real Madrid in last season's Champions League quarter-finals, where he scored two stunning free-kicks. Mendieta pointed to this as a key moment, saying, "Especially after what he did against Real Madrid last season... For fans who don't watch the Premier League that was the highlight."
Rumours of Real Madrid's interest in the player first surfaced in November 2025. Mendieta added weight to these whispers, commenting, "Could we see Declan Rice at Real Madrid? If he ever became available, he is exactly the profile of player they would want."
Arteta's Verdict and Current Situation
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was unequivocal in his assessment of Rice's quality following a match-winning two-goal display in a 3-2 victory over AFC Bournemouth on Saturday. "Yes, for me yes, [he is one of best midfielders in the world]," Arteta affirmed. "He's such a pivotal player for us."
Despite the external noise, Rice is under contract at Arsenal until 2028, with the club holding an option to extend that deal by a further year. There is also no suggestion from the player's camp that he is actively seeking a move away from the Emirates Stadium.
Mendieta concluded by acknowledging the current reality, stating, "At the moment he is competing in the Premier League and the Champions League with Arsenal so he is going nowhere. But if that were to change I think Real Madrid would be looking at him in the market, definitely."
