Man Utd's De Ligt Concern: Back Injury Timeline & Carrick's Defensive Dilemma
De Ligt's Man Utd injury worry explained

Manchester United's turbulent season has taken another worrying turn, with key defender Matthijs de Ligt now absent for over six weeks due to a persistent and poorly-defined back problem.

The Timeline of a Mystery Injury

De Ligt last played a full 90 minutes in the victory away to Crystal Palace on 30 November. After missing the subsequent match against West Ham, then-manager Ruben Amorim initially downplayed the issue on 4 December, optimistically predicting a swift return. However, a week later, ahead of facing Bournemouth, Amorim revealed the problem was a back issue, admitting uncertainty over the precise nature of the injury.

Since those comments, there has been a concerning radio silence from the club. No further updates have been provided, and there is no firm indication of when the 26-year-old Netherlands international will be back in action. This lack of communication has fuelled anxiety among the fanbase, particularly given the defender's importance.

Why Back Injuries Are a Major Worry

Stephen Smith, CEO of injury analytics firm Kitman Labs, explained to Metro.co.uk why spinal issues are so problematic for elite athletes. "They are always complex, or they have the potential to be very complex," Smith stated. "We don't know if it is a muscular issue, a neural issue or an articular (joint) issue. Each would come with its own set of complications and timelines."

He highlighted the debilitating nature of such injuries, noting an athlete cannot run, twist, or kick effectively if the back is compromised. Smith suggested the issue may have been "more serious than was initially communicated" or simply taken longer to resolve than first hoped.

The shadow of Arsenal's William Saliba looms large. The Gunners' 2023 title challenge derailed after Saliba suffered a back injury in March, ruling him out for the season's final three months. While there's no suggestion de Ligt has an identical problem, it underscores the potential severity.

The Impact on Carrick's New Era

The timing is particularly awkward for new interim boss Michael Carrick. Confirmed on Wednesday, the former midfielder is expected to abandon Amorim's unpopular 3-4-3 system and revert to a back four. Having his best and most dominant centre-half available for this tactical transition would have been ideal.

De Ligt's absence is keenly felt. Despite missing the last nine games, no other United player has won more aerial duels this season. Prior to his injury, he had played every minute of every Premier League game and was a strong contender for the club's player of the season.

This latest setback marks the longest spell out of his career—44 days and counting, surpassing a three-month shoulder absence in 2020. The only positive note is that he has no significant history of back problems, which experts suggest could mean the issue is a one-off.

With United out of the FA Cup, their schedule is now relatively light, featuring just 17 remaining games. This could aid de Ligt's recovery, allowing more rest between matches. As Smith noted, a less congested fixture list "simplifies things" for managing such injuries. For Carrick and United, hoping their defensive linchpin is "over the worst of it" will be a priority as they aim to salvage their Champions League push.
