Coronation Street star Sydney Martin has confirmed that her character Betsy Swain is set for a major new storyline, describing her as a 'ticking time bomb'. The actress, who plays the troubled teen, spoke to Inside Soap about the upcoming plot involving Dylan Wilson, played by Liam McCheyne.
Betsy's Tumultuous Journey
Betsy Swain has endured a series of traumatic events since arriving in Weatherfield. She lost her mother, Becky Swain, a police officer killed in a hit-and-run, blackmailed Carla Connor, and became entangled with villain Joel Deering. More recently, she witnessed the stabbing of boyfriend Mason Radcliffe, was shot by her adoptive mother Lisa Swain during a showdown with escaped killer Rob Donovan, and discovered her birth mother Becky was alive but later imprisoned for violent crimes. Last week, she found a body just after her mother's wedding.
What Sydney Martin Says
Speaking to Inside Soap, Sydney Martin said: 'Dylan and Betsy have been through a lot together, there's beautiful moments to come. They're polar opposites; she's this ticking time bomb that could go off at any time, and he's quite grounded and sweet.' She added that their dynamic creates both comedic and touching scenes. Martin expressed excitement about finally having her own storyline: 'It's always been great to support my on-screen mums and family, now I get to pave my own way. I've been working hard, so I'm really excited for people to see it. It's going to be a busy summer.'
Liam McCheyne's Promise
Liam McCheyne, who plays Dylan, also shared his enthusiasm: 'It's going to be quite a big 2026. I've got a nice storyline to get my teeth stuck into. It'll be quite a lot of work with Sydney. It's very coming of age. It's a subject storyline, which is obviously Corrie's speciality – it's one thing the show is amazing at.' He noted his off-screen friendship with Sydney and said Dylan is 'a trier, bless him.'
Vicky Myers Weighs In
Vicky Myers, who plays Lisa Swain, confirmed she will be 'massively' involved as Betsy's mother. 'If Betsy's involved, I think it's safe to say that Lisa will be somewhere looking over her shoulder,' she said. Myers teased that the storyline is 'extremely powerful' and 'huge,' adding: 'I'm really excited for both of them – both Liam and Sydney – because it's something that is going to be challenging for them. But they have the skills and talent to showcase it.'
