Chelsea's Jesse Derry joins Sporting on loan after new deal

Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry has secured a loan move to Sporting Lisbon after agreeing a new contract with the Blues, the 19-year-old forward will spend the 2026-27 season in Portugal.

Derry's rapid rise at Chelsea

Derry made his first-team debut last season, featuring three times during a chaotic campaign for Chelsea. The teenager joined from Crystal Palace in 2025 and quickly rose through the ranks. He made one Premier League appearance and two in the FA Cup, but has already attracted attention from top European clubs.

Bayern Munich were credited with an interest this summer, but Derry will head to Lisbon for a year to continue his development. Portuguese outlet Record reports that he will spend the season with Sporting after signing a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

Interest from multiple clubs

The report notes that Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, as well as Championship side Southampton, were also interested. Chelsea legend Frank Lampard wanted to bring Derry on loan to newly-promoted Coventry City.

Instead, Derry joins a side competing in the Champions League after Sporting finished second in the Primeira Liga last season.

Background and potential

Derry is the son of former QPR, Leeds and Crystal Palace player Shaun Derry. He has been capped up to Under-19 level by England and scored twice in the group stage of the 2025 Under-19 European Championship, though England were eliminated after finishing third behind Netherlands and Germany.

Rio Ferdinand previously hailed Derry as one of the four brightest young talents in the Premier League. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: 'If you were going to put your money on four kids right now, in the Premier League to do their thing, based on what you're seeing now, you've got Rio at Liverpool, you've got Max Dowman, you've got JJ Gabriel at Manchester United and Jesse Derry at Chelsea. Jesse Derry, I know his dad, Shaun, he's an ex-player, but I know the kid, wow, ridiculous, not only a talent, but an actual, like, as a kid who loves, loves the game.'
