Chelsea trio Cole Palmer, Trevor Chalobah, and Levi Colwill appear set to miss out on Thomas Tuchel's 26-man England squad for the World Cup, according to widespread reports. Palmer, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2023, has endured his least productive season, scoring only nine Premier League goals. Persistent injuries have sidelined the 24-year-old for large portions of the campaign, and he has failed to find the net in his last 12 matches across all competitions. This poor run of form has reportedly cost him a place in Tuchel's squad, which is due to be announced on Friday.
Defensive Decisions
Levi Colwill and Trevor Chalobah are also expected to be overlooked for the squad as potential centre-back cover. Chalobah earned his England debut under Tuchel against Senegal last year and has featured prominently for Chelsea this season. However, Colwill has only recently returned to first-team action after suffering an ACL injury during pre-season. With both missing out, Dan Burn and John Stones are likely to join Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa as England's centre-back options. Reece James could be the sole Chelsea representative in the squad if selected at right-back.
Other Notable Omissions
Phil Foden is another expected casualty in forward areas following a below-par season with Manchester City. In midfield, Adam Wharton is not anticipated to be named in the squad, with Kobbie Mainoo set to take his place. Earlier on Thursday, Harry Maguire confirmed he will not be in England's squad despite impressive form for Manchester United under Michal Carrick. Posting on Instagram, the 33-year-old said he was 'left shocked and gutted' by the decision, adding that he was confident he could have played a major part this summer.
