Chelsea Receive Transfer Recommendation for £18m Former Liverpool Star
Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has identified his preferred transfer target for the Blues after Gary Neville issued a stark warning about the club's goalkeeping situation. The recommendation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Chelsea's first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Neville's Critical Assessment of Chelsea's Squad
Speaking after Chelsea's disappointing defeat to London rivals Arsenal earlier this month, Manchester United legend Gary Neville insisted the west London club remains deficient in three crucial positions. "I flip between thinking they're miles away and thinking if they can get a goalkeeper, an experienced centre-back and an experienced centre-forward they could be in business," Neville stated.
Neville specifically highlighted the goalkeeping position as problematic, saying of Sanchez: "I'm going to talk about the goalkeeper as well because he invites problems, every time I watch him my heart is in my mouth. He flaps at the Arsenal goal so for me Chelsea are three players short."
Sanchez's Uncertain Position at Stamford Bridge
Robert Sanchez has served as Chelsea's primary goalkeeper for the past two seasons but has faced consistent criticism for high-profile errors. Manager Liam Rosenior, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in January, recently dropped Sanchez for Chelsea's 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, opting instead for Filip Jorgensen.
Explaining his decision, Rosenior said: "Rob [Sanchez] is an outstanding goalkeeper. I just saw Filip [Jorgensen] in training and sometimes as a manager you have to go with your gut. Filip gave us something different and they will both be fighting it out for the rest of the season."
Johnson's Transfer Recommendations
While Glen Johnson doesn't believe Sanchez requires immediate replacement, the former Chelsea defender has identified two potential targets for the club. Speaking to BoyleSports, Johnson revealed his admiration for Caoimhin Kelleher and James Trafford.
"Caoimhin Kelleher would definitely be the less risky option right now," Johnson emphasized. "Kelleher, anytime he was called upon for Liverpool, was fantastic. He's now still doing another good job at Brentford. So if I had to pick a target now for Chelsea, it'd definitely be him."
Kelleher's Credentials and Current Form
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has enjoyed a promising first season with Brentford following his £18 million transfer from Liverpool last summer. During his six years at Anfield, Kelleher impressed when given opportunities but remained behind superstar goalkeeper Alisson in the pecking order.
Johnson highlighted Kelleher's experience in high-pressure situations, noting: "He's done it with Liverpool, a big club in big games and big tournaments. So I'd say that's the safest option."
Alternative Option and Chelsea's Current Situation
James Trafford represents another potential target, though Johnson acknowledged this would be a riskier move. The England U21 star joined Manchester City from Burnley for £31 million less than twelve months ago but faces competition from world-class goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
"James Trafford to Chelsea? It worked with Cole Palmer, didn't it?" Johnson questioned. "It'd be unlikely, I guess, because it's a big role to be the number one goalkeeper at Chelsea. You normally need a lot of experience."
Chelsea's Recent Performances and Future Prospects
Chelsea recently overcame Championship side Wrexham to advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals, though the match presented some concerning moments. The Blues will discover their last-eight opponents as they continue their pursuit of silverware this season.
Johnson offered a balanced perspective on Sanchez's current standing: "I don't think he's been bad enough to say, 'Right, you have to replace him.' Because when he's in form, I think he's been fantastic. He just needs to bounce back now and regain his confidence."
The transfer recommendations come as Chelsea continues to evaluate their squad options ahead of the summer transfer window, with the goalkeeping position emerging as a particular area of discussion among football pundits and former players.
