Chelsea's Carabao Cup semi-final ambitions suffered a significant blow at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, but a spirited late fightback ensured the tie remains delicately poised. The Blues fell to a 3-2 first-leg defeat against rivals Arsenal, with goalkeeper Robert Sanchez's performance overshadowing a superb substitute appearance from Alejandro Garnacho.
Costly Errors Define Chaotic Encounter
The home side's evening began in the worst possible fashion. With just seven minutes on the clock, Robert Sanchez committed a glaring error, completely missing his punch from an Arsenal corner. The ball fell kindly to defender Ben White, who nodded into an empty net from close range to stun the home crowd.
Sanchez's nightmare continued early in the second half. In the 49th minute, the Spanish goalkeeper attempted to gather a low cross but allowed it to slip through his grasp. The ball rolled invitingly to Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, who had the simplest of tasks to tap home and double the visitors' advantage.
Manager Liam Rosenior's response was decisive, making a triple substitution shortly after the hour mark. The change had an almost immediate impact. Within five minutes of his introduction, Alejandro Garnacho halved the deficit, arriving at the back post to thunder home a clever, floated cross from Pedro Neto.
Garnacho Spark Fails to Mask Defensive Frailties
Chelsea's hope was short-lived. Arsenal restored their two-goal cushion with a beautifully worked team goal, finished by Martin Zubimendi. The Blues' defending during the move was passive and disorganised, leaving huge gaps for the Gunners to exploit. Sanchez did atone slightly with a smart save with his foot to deny Mikel Merino a fourth for Arsenal.
That stop proved crucial as Chelsea mounted a late charge. In the 84th minute, the ball broke to Garnacho following a corner, and the substitute displayed superb technique to keep his volley down and under the bar, securing his brace and a vital second away goal for Chelsea.
Player Ratings: Hero and Villain Emerge
Robert Sanchez (3/10): A performance to forget. His mistake for the opener set a negative tone, and his error for the second was equally poor. Made a good late save but his clumsiness defined the game.
Alejandro Garnacho (8/10): The match-winner turned saviour. Introduced on 52 minutes, he scored with his first real touch and added a superb second late on. His clinical finishing has kept Chelsea firmly in this semi-final tie.
The rest of the Chelsea squad received middling reviews. The defence, including Wesley Fofana and Trevor Chalobah, was rated as too passive (5/10), while wing-back Marc Cucurella (6/10) was often isolated. Midfielders Andrey Santos and Enzo Fernandez (5/10 and 6/10 respectively) struggled to control the game, and forward Marc Guiu (5/10) was largely anonymous before being substituted.
The result leaves Chelsea with a monumental task at the Emirates Stadium for the second leg. However, Garnacho's double and the precious away goals provide a glimmer of hope that this cup dream is not yet over.
