Chelsea Legend's Scathing Attack on Arsenal's Title Charge
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has launched a blistering attack on Arsenal's Premier League title campaign, accusing the Gunners of 'cheating' their way to the top of the table and claiming four key players are suffering because of Mikel Arteta's 'ridiculous' tactics.
'I Wouldn't Recognize Them as Winners'
In a controversial interview with talkSPORT, the two-time Premier League winner declared he 'will not recognize' Arsenal as champions if they secure the title this season, citing their heavy reliance on set-piece goals as fundamentally unfair.
'When I watch Arsenal play they depend solely on corners,' Obi Mikel stated emphatically. 'You have spent almost a billion, Mikel Arteta, and you're telling me the only way you can win games is through corner kicks? It's ridiculous.'
The Nigerian midfielder, who enjoyed a successful spell at Chelsea between 2006 and 2017, argued that Arsenal's current approach represents a form of cheating that should be addressed by Premier League authorities.
Four Stars Suffering Under Current System
Obi Mikel specifically highlighted four Arsenal players he believes are being negatively impacted by Arteta's tactical approach: Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Eberechi Eze.
'The creativity they have, the potential they have — it's all gone out of the window,' he lamented. 'We don't see the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Eberechi Eze, Martin Odegaard anymore because they depend solely on corners.'
The statistics support some of Obi Mikel's concerns. Only striker Viktor Gyokeres has scored more than six Premier League goals for Arsenal this season, with captain Odegaard and winger Martinelli managing just one goal each in league competition.
Title Race Context and Fan Sentiment
Arsenal currently boast a seven-point lead over defending champions Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table, though City have a game in hand and a crucial home match against the Gunners still to play. The North London club last won the Premier League in 2004 under Arsène Wenger.
Despite their commanding position, Arsenal have attracted criticism from pundits and some sections of their own fanbase for what many perceive as a pragmatic, set-piece dependent style of play.
'The only reason Arsenal fans are not complaining about the style of football is because they're top of the league,' Obi Mikel observed, suggesting that results are masking deeper tactical issues.
Arteta's Response and European Context
The criticism comes as Arsenal continue to compete on multiple fronts, including the Champions League where they drew 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen in their last-16 first-leg encounter on Wednesday night.
Speaking after the European match, Arteta acknowledged his team's performance wasn't perfect: 'The game had different phases... We weren't ready enough; we conceded a chance on the header and after that we conceded the goal.'
However, the Arsenal manager defended his team's resilience: 'In the end, we found a way to score the goal and draw the game.'
Broader Football Debate
Obi Mikel's comments have ignited a broader debate about tactical approaches in modern football, with some defending Arsenal's right to utilize whatever methods bring success, while others echo concerns about stifling creative talent.
'You can't play like this when you've spent a billion,' the former Chelsea star insisted. 'There's so much creativity in the squad – Eze, Odegaard, Saka – let them express themselves. They are so rigid and dependent on corner kicks.'
Arsenal face Everton in their next Premier League fixture this weekend before the crucial second leg against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night, with the title race and European ambitions both hanging in the balance.
