Chelsea Injury Update: Rosenior on Palmer, James & Gittens Ahead of Busy Run
Chelsea boss Rosenior issues triple injury update

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has delivered a crucial update on the fitness of several key players following his side's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg defeat to Arsenal.

Injury Latest on Key Trio

The new Blues boss confirmed that Cole Palmer missed the 3-2 loss at Stamford Bridge due to a minor leg strain. Rosenior explained the decision, stating the game came too early for the attacker but expressing hope he would return to training on Friday, 16th January 2026, and be available for the Premier League clash with Brentford on Saturday.

"If you play a player too early in January with a minor strain, it can turn into six weeks," Rosenior told Sky Sports. "I cannot afford to lose Cole Palmer for six weeks."

Captain Reece James was also absent due to a significant knock on his hip, though he is also hoped to be back for the weekend fixture. Furthermore, young midfielder Jamie Gittens was a late withdrawal after falling ill just four hours before the Arsenal match, despite being set to play.

Sanchez Backed Despite Errors

The match itself saw Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez at fault for two Arsenal goals, but Rosenior was quick to defend his player after the final whistle. The manager emphasised collective responsibility and highlighted a world-class save Sanchez made in the second half to keep his team in the tie.

"I'm asking Rob to do things that he hasn't done before," said Rosenior. "When my players make mistakes, I'm accountable. That's on me... He's had a very good season." The Spaniard's errors were offset by a brace from substitute Alejandro Garnacho, leaving the semi-final poised at 3-2 ahead of the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Gruelling Fixture List Ahead

The injury news comes as Chelsea prepare for a demanding schedule across multiple competitions. After facing Brentford, the Blues' run includes:

  • Champions League match vs Pafos
  • Premier League clash with Crystal Palace
  • Champions League fixture against Napoli
  • Premier League London derby at West Ham

Rosenior pointed to the absentees as a challenge, noting that alongside Palmer, James, and Gittens, the team was also without the suspended Moises Caicedo and injured Malo Gusto for the Arsenal game. The swift return of his key men will be vital for navigating this critical period.
