Charlton Athletic 'Poised' to Sign Lyndon Dykes in Championship Transfer Battle
Charlton Athletic Lead Race for Birmingham Striker Lyndon Dykes

Charlton Athletic are reportedly on the verge of winning a three-way Championship battle to secure the signature of Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes during the January transfer window.

Addicks Lead Race for Experienced Forward

According to reports, Nathan Jones's Charlton side are 'poised' to beat competition from Leicester City and Ipswich Town to sign the 30-year-old Scottish international. The Addicks' manager is keen to add proven firepower to his squad as they push on in the second half of the season.

Dykes, who has 177 Championship appearances to his name, moved to St Andrew's from Queens Park Rangers in August 2024 on a three-year deal. However, he has struggled to secure a regular starting role under Birmingham boss Chris Davies this term.

Dykes Seeking Regular Football Ahead of World Cup

His fringe status at Birmingham has impacted his international ambitions, with the striker eager to be part of Scotland's squad for the upcoming World Cup in the summer. Dykes has earned 48 caps for his country but has started just one of Scotland's last five matches, increasing his need for consistent club minutes.

Sources indicate that Birmingham City are 'ready' to let Dykes depart this month, as he does not feature prominently in Davies's plans. His exit would reportedly free up space and resources for the Blues to pursue a new striker more likely to challenge for a first-team place.

Jones's Intensive Transfer Push

Charlton's interest was first highlighted earlier this month, with the Daily Record stating the club were 'keen' on a January move. Manager Nathan Jones has been working tirelessly to strengthen his squad, telling reporter Richard Cawley: "I'm sleeping at the training ground and we're doing 15 hours a day. We cannot do any more to get people in. They (the speed of deals) will depend on other clubs. We know exactly who we want."

Despite the strong links and reported lead in the race, a final conclusion to the transfer saga is yet to be reached, with other clubs potentially still in the frame.

Dykes himself has spoken about his role at Birmingham this season, highlighting his experience after scoring late winners against Swansea City and Blackburn Rovers. He told the club's website in October: "All I want is to help out the team as much as I can. I think I am one of the most experienced players here in terms of playing in the Championship... When I got my chance on the field, I wanted to show what I can do."
