Michael Carrick has confirmed that Casemiro will not feature in Manchester United's final Premier League match of the season against Brighton, revealing that the Brazilian's last appearance for the club was the emotional home victory over Nottingham Forest last weekend.
Speaking to reporters, Carrick explained that the decision was made last week to ensure Casemiro's final game at Old Trafford would be a fitting farewell. The 34-year-old midfielder, who joined the Red Devils from Real Madrid in 2022, has been a key figure this season, making 34 league appearances. However, with his contract expiring and the club opting not to extend it, his departure was sealed in January.
The Brazil international, who is expected to be part of his country's squad for the upcoming World Cup, received a heartfelt send-off from the home fans after United's 3-2 win over Forest. Carrick praised Casemiro's contributions, stating: 'I decided last week would be his last game. It went as well as we could have hoped, and he's been fantastic. I felt it was the right time for him and the club.'
Casemiro himself took to social media to express his gratitude, writing: 'Manchester will forever be my home. These past four years have been unforgettable. Thank you for every cheer and every memory. Forever a Red Devil.' Reports suggest he is close to joining Inter Miami, despite interest from European and Saudi Arabian clubs.
Looking ahead to Sunday's match at the Amex Stadium, Carrick indicated that several academy talents could feature, given United's secured third-place finish. 'This club is about bringing young players through and giving them opportunities,' he said. 'We feel a responsibility to respect the game, but it's also a chance for our young players to take the next step.' Brighton, meanwhile, are fighting for European qualification, sitting seventh and needing a result to secure their spot.
