Carrick Opens Up About Anger in Management After Manchester United's Defeat
Manchester United's interim head coach, Michael Carrick, has candidly admitted to experiencing anger with his players following a dramatic late defeat at Newcastle United. The Red Devils suffered a 2-1 loss at St James' Park this month, conceding a 90th-minute goal from William Osula that ended Carrick's unbeaten start in charge.
Emotional Turmoil in Elite Football
Carrick, known for his calm demeanor on the sidelines, acknowledged that anger is a natural part of elite sports management. "There's a time and a place for it," he stated. "We were deeply disappointed with the result at Newcastle, and those feelings are real. In high-performance environments, you must play with emotion and intensity, which can sometimes turn aggressive. As a manager, I have to manage my own emotions to guide the players effectively."
This defeat marks the only blemish in Carrick's nine-match interim tenure this season, with Manchester United securing seven wins and one draw, accumulating 22 points from a possible 27. The 44-year-old emphasized that his emotional displays are not calculated performances but genuine reactions tailored to the team's needs. "I go with how I feel at the moment," Carrick explained. "Sometimes it's louder, sometimes calmer. The key is getting the players in the right mindset, which is the essence of coaching."
Injury Concerns for Key Defender
In addition to the emotional fallout from the Newcastle match, Carrick provided an update on defender Matthijs de Ligt, who has been sidelined since November with a back injury. The Dutch international's return this season remains uncertain. "Back injuries can be tricky," Carrick noted. "We're being patient and working through it, but it's unclear if he'll play again this season. We're doing everything to support him and hope for a swift recovery."
Carrick declined to comment on whether De Ligt might require surgery, stating, "I don't want to speculate at this stage. Our focus is on helping Matta recover as quickly as possible."
