Michael Carrick has dismissed claims that Manchester United have been handed an easy start to the Premier League season, arguing that early-season fixtures are often the most challenging due to squad integration and fitness levels.
Carrick challenges early fixture narrative
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the former United midfielder and current first-team coach rejected the notion that the club's opening matches against the likes of Fulham, Brighton, and Nottingham Forest represent a straightforward run. Carrick pointed out that the Premier League is unpredictable and that early-season games carry unique pressures.
“I hear people talking about us having an easy start, but I don't see it that way at all,” Carrick said. “Every game in this league is tough, and the early ones are particularly difficult because you're still building rhythm and understanding. There's no such thing as an easy game in the Premier League.”
Early-season challenges for United
Carrick emphasised that the club's focus remains on performance and preparation rather than fixture lists. He noted that Manchester United's squad is still adapting to new tactical approaches and that the opening weeks of the season are critical for building momentum.
“We've had a good pre-season, but that's different from competitive matches. The intensity, the pace, the pressure—it all ramps up. You can't take anything for granted,” Carrick added. “Our job is to prepare properly for each opponent, regardless of who they are or where they are in the table.”
According to Manchester United's official website, the club's opening five fixtures include matches against Fulham (home), Brighton (away), Nottingham Forest (home), Southampton (away), and Crystal Palace (home). The run has been described by some pundits as relatively favourable compared to the schedules of rivals such as Arsenal and Liverpool.
Focus on internal progress
Carrick stressed that the squad is concentrating on its own development rather than external perceptions. He highlighted the importance of integrating new signings and ensuring that returning players are match-fit.
“We have a lot of quality in the squad, but quality alone isn't enough. You need to work hard, you need to be organised, and you need to be ready for whatever the game throws at you,” Carrick said. “The start of the season is about laying foundations. If you get that right, you give yourself a chance to build something special.”
Manchester United finished third in the Premier League last season and are aiming to challenge for the title this campaign. The club's management has publicly stated that closing the gap to league leaders Manchester City is a priority.
Impact on season outlook
Carrick's comments come as United prepare for their opening fixture against Fulham at Old Trafford. The match is expected to draw a capacity crowd, with fans eager to see how the team performs after a summer of squad adjustments. Carrick's dismissal of the easy-start narrative underscores the club's determination to avoid complacency and maintain focus from the first whistle.
