Amy Hunt secured her second gold medal of the 2026 European Athletics Championships on Thursday, winning the 200m final in a championship record time of 22.01 seconds. The 24-year-old Briton, who had already claimed the 100m title earlier in the week, dominated the race at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, finishing ahead of Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji and Germany's Lisa-Marie Kwayie.
Hunt's Double Gold and Championship Record
Hunt's victory marked the first time a British woman has completed the 100m-200m double at the European Championships since 2016. Her time of 22.01 seconds shaved 0.03 seconds off the previous championship record set by Dafne Schippers in 2014. The performance also made her the fourth-fastest British woman of all time over 200m.
Speaking after the race, Hunt said: "I'm absolutely thrilled. To come away with two golds and a championship record is beyond my wildest dreams. The crowd was incredible, and I felt so much support from the stands. This is a moment I'll never forget."
Strong British Showing on Day Four
Hunt was not the only British success on day four. Laura Muir took silver in the 1500m, finishing behind Norway's Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal, while the men's 4x400m relay team claimed bronze behind the Netherlands and Belgium. The British team now sits third in the medal table with 12 medals, trailing leaders Italy and second-placed Germany.
In other finals, Italy's Marcell Jacobs won the men's 100m in 9.95 seconds, and Poland's Wojciech Nowicki took the hammer throw title with a season's best of 80.43 metres. The championships continue through Sunday, with the women's 800m and men's 200m finals scheduled for Friday.
Looking Ahead to the Rest of the Championships
With two days remaining, Hunt has confirmed she will not compete in the 4x100m relay, citing fatigue. British Athletics performance director, Sarah Rowell, said: "Amy has been phenomenal this week. We're proud of her achievements, and we're confident the relay team can still deliver without her. The focus now is on the remaining events and finishing the championships strongly."
Friday's schedule includes the women's 800m, where Britain's Keely Hodgkinson is the favourite, and the men's 200m, where Hunt's teammate Zharnel Hughes will be aiming for a medal. The championships conclude on Sunday with the marathons and the men's 4x400m relay final.
