Jamie Carragher Warns Arsenal's Martin Zubimendi Is a Major Problem for Arteta

Jamie Carragher Sounds Alarm Over Arsenal Midfielder Martin Zubimendi's Form

Jamie Carragher has expressed serious concerns about Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, labeling him a significant problem for manager Mikel Arteta as the Premier League title race intensifies. Carragher pointed to Zubimendi's recent performances, particularly in a damaging defeat to Bournemouth, as evidence that the player is "really struggling" and affecting the team's overall confidence.

From Promising Start to Confidence Crisis

Martin Zubimendi joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in the summer and initially made a strong impression, quickly forming an effective partnership with Declan Rice. His early contributions helped Arsenal establish a commanding lead at the top of the Premier League table, with the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho barely noticed. However, with 53 appearances for club and country this season, Zubimendi has been overworked, and Arteta now appears to be paying the price for relying too heavily on the 27-year-old.

Injuries and squad decisions, such as allowing Ethan Nwaneri to go on loan in January, have left Arteta with limited options, forcing him to persist with Zubimendi despite a noticeable dip in form. During the Bournemouth match, Zubimendi's confidence seemed shattered, with the midfielder struggling against opponents who pressed him deep in his own territory. He has lost his ambition in passing and is no longer progressing the ball as instinctively as he did earlier in the season.

Carragher's Analysis of Arsenal's Midfield Woes

Jamie Carragher highlighted specific instances from the Bournemouth game to illustrate Zubimendi's struggles. He noted that Zubimendi's reluctance to feed Arsenal's attacking players resulted in goalkeeper David Raya receiving 38 passes during a disjointed performance. Carragher compared this to Manchester City's approach, emphasizing how City efficiently moves the ball to their front players to beat the press.

Carragher said, "A three vs three situation and imagine City yesterday. Semenyo, Doku, Haaland and getting the ball into them. That's what Pep's done before and we've seen it before." He questioned why Arsenal wasn't executing similar passes, pointing to a lack of confidence or quality in the front three. Carragher added, "Is it because it wasn't part of the plan from Arteta or have they not got confidence in these players. I do think they lack real quality in the front three, I've said that before and I won't change my mind."

Impact on Arsenal's Title Hopes

Carragher further criticized Zubimendi for missing opportunities to play simple, effective passes. In one example, he noted that Zubimendi failed to play a quick pass to William Saliba, opting instead for a long, hopeful ball that lacked quality. Carragher stated, "A player of that quality has to just play that around the corner to Saliba and you're back out, absolutely fine. But Zubimendi is having a really tough time in midfield and the ball ends up just going long, high and hopeful. No quality into the front players and that was the plan."

While Bournemouth's performance was commendable, Carragher also highlighted Arsenal's failure to adapt to the game state. He mentioned that Bournemouth players were not set at times, presenting opportunities for Arsenal to move the ball quickly and get Zubimendi involved. However, Zubimendi's poor passing contributed to Bournemouth's first goal, underscoring his current struggles.

Carragher concluded, "He's your orchestrator in that deep position but he's really struggling, it's a really poor pass and from that throw that's where the first goal comes from." This analysis raises questions about whether Zubimendi can regain his form in time to help Arsenal maintain their title challenge, with Manchester City closing in on the league leaders.
